Chapter 19 – The Wilkins and the Prestons

Joe: You mean he is going to play golf at St Andrews?

Bette: If we can get them on the course?  Yes, he will.

Joe:  You know that is the ultimate dream of every golfer in the world? To play the old course at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club?

Bette: There is no guarantee of that. But my friend who owns the inn has significant contacts and resources. She may even be a member of the club.

Barbara: I don’t know. That’s a long way away and a month is a long time. John David is only twelve and he has never been away from us for that long. I was in hopes of sending him to camp next summer. That was going to be a two-week camp. But I was going to send Joey as well so that he wouldn’t be totally on his own.  Joe, we need to think about this.

Tina: If John Daniel were to go, he would need his winter and fall clothing for the trip. Scotland is chilly and the area is near the sea. So, wind and rain will not be unusual. The average temperature for the month of August in St Andrews is 57 degrees and it has a high humidity. So, dressing properly for the weather is a must. We can hope for some warm and sunny days, but it’s not like we have any influence in that department. But we can promise that the boys will see and experience some of the history and local culture which Scotland has to offer.

Joe: Well, if we are going to Yellowstone, he would already have a wardrobe for Scotland. That is of course if he doesn’t suddenly outgrow those clothes.

Barbara: I was thinking that if I order clothes before Christmas, I would order some slightly larger than his current size. He might also be able to use some of the winter clothes we get for Joey. So, I do not see clothing as being a problem. It’s just being that far away and not with us.

Bette: Take your time thinking about this. We would love to have invited the entire family; however, we have just about reached the maximum number of people the inn will accommodate. We understand that this is a major ask for you guys. Just know, that your son will be safe and well cared for. He will never be without supervision except when the boys are safely within their bedroom. Mary and Margaret will be going. Both of my sisters and their spouses will be going. Angie will be going and she may ask her roommate from college to go with us. Daniel and John David will be the only two in of their age in the group. Our friends are bringing their two girls and a nanny, and our other friend has two sons who are both in college who may or may not come. They are Angie’s age. So, as you can see, Daniel needs a travel mate. We would love to have John David with us.
