Chapter 19 – The Wilkins and the Prestons

Bette and Tina plated the food and put the garnishes on the peas, and then covered each plate with a dome to keep the food warm. The corn bread was put into a basket and covered with a towel and all was put on a cart which was readied to wheel to the Lanai. The two worked well together. Bette had learned to anticipate Tina’s process and was eager to be efficient and make Tina’s job easier. Bette pushed the cart toward the Lanai. The boys came out of the cabana in their baggy shorts and t-shirts and sneakers and headed for the table. Tina invited everyone to find a place at the table as Mary and Margaret filled the water and tea glasses. The food was served and the domes were removed. Everyone was pleased with what they were seeing. They passed the cornbread around and then the butter.

Tina: Now take plenty of butter if you want it on both your corn and your corn bread. If it’s not enough, we have more.

Daniel showed Joey and John David how to take a generous portion of butter and place it on the bread-and-butter plate and then pass it on.

Daniel: Wow, this is a lot vegetables and the pork chops are sooo good.

Joe:  Oh, and these peas with green onions and tomatoes. I don’t think I’ve ever had a dish like this.

Tina: You may want to put some hot sauce on it and mix it up. It really adds a zing to the taste.

Mary: These are the vegetables we bought at the country fair last week.

Margaret: Yes, and then worked every evening to get them into the freezer. Boy, fresh food makes a huge difference in the taste.

Barbara: You mean, you actually shelled these peas and then cooked them and froze them last week?

Bette: Yep. I my fingers are just now healing form that little chore. The next night we shucked the corn and blanched it and got it into the freezer and then on Wednesday, we did the string beans. The pork chops are curtesy of Whole Foods. Oh, and on last Sunday night after we came back from the fair, we worked on blueberries and strawberries.
