    “It certainly would have caught my eye if I were running a gallery again, but I’m not and have no intention of in the future. You really didn’t call me here to just show me that piece.”

     

    “I called you here to talk,” Maxine smiled sadly at her daughter. “Last week at dinner I made the mistake of rattling questions off at you, maybe today we should take a different approach. Maybe you should ask me questions and that wouldn’t put you on the defensive as much.”

     

    “You know the questions I’ll ask. I’m not sure you want to answer any of them.”

     

    “Try me,” Maxine leaned back well prepared for the questions that Bette would ask. She knew they would be hard, they would be from a place of anger, but she was prepared to do what she needed to in order to win a spot in Bette’s life, including hopefully one day Tina and Angie’s as well.

     

    “Why wasn’t I enough for you?” Bette surprised herself with the first question but knew it was the right one she needed answered.

     

    “Oh Bette, you’ve always been more than enough, but that’s an understandable question. Kit had come to live with us and Melvin, well he was under a lot of pressure. Plus the death of Kit’s mom when she was so young, it certainly wasn’t expected that we would have Kit living with us. And as I told you before, when the pressure became too much for him and he started a cycle of abuse, I abused myself as well. I did come back for you Bette, but all I could do was watch from the sidelines.”

     

    “That was a choice, but here is one thing I can’t get out of my mind. If you followed me throughout my life from that point forward, Daddy certainly wasn’t with me when you reconnected with Kit. In fact, dare I say, he was rather disappointed in my life choices and my relationship with Tina. I was a grown woman living her life on her own trying to stop it from spiraling out of control.”

     

    “I was wrong,” Maxine admitted. “I should have reached out to you as I did Kit and met you at the CAC to give you a chance to know me. I should have realized that, although different, you were just as out of control as Kit was in your life back then.”

    1. At last, Bette is allowing herself to relax with Maxine and just go with the flow. Too bad it takes a family emergency to get to accept the good will of others. She still needs to hear Maxine’s story. This was the first time that anyone had said Melvin had been abusive. I’m not sure Bette understands the extent of Melvin’s abuse. And once she hears it, will she accept that Melvin was not the man she thought he was?

      I love the fact that Maxine called Alice when she knew Kit was not available. Maxine seems to be familiar with what goes on in an emergency room. And she seems to know how to clam Bette down. Good thing Tina is not hurt very bad.

      Good chapter….great story line for this book. I hooked into this story and am anxiously waiting for the next chapter….

      Glad that Tina isn’t that bad injured and that Angelica wasn’t hurt at all.

      Good to see Bette a little bit more relaxed with Maxine and that Maxine seems to respect the boundaries Bette set.

      Loving the way Bette is opening up to listen to Maxine.
      I think she will need a lot of support when she finds out the extent of Melvin’s abuse.
