    “I shouldn’t have taken the easy road through Tina and I honestly don’t know what I thought would happen since you would eventually meet me. When the opportunity arose, I was just so happy to be getting to know her and Angelica that I lost my head.”

     

    “Yes, that was very wrong.”

     

    “She’s amazing by the way,” Maxine was hopeful when the subject of Tina seemed to continue, and Bette’s features softened. “Both of them are. But Tina, she’s such a good mother she’s just impresses me on so many levels personally and professionally. She certainly is running that movie studio she works at and seems to thrive on it.”

     

    “It’s taken both of us a long time to see that,” Bette admitted sipping her coffee, “we made a mistake by having her take time off to prepare for having a baby. We both sort of lost who we were during that time and our relationship became unbalanced.”

     

    “It’s very LA,” Maxine couldn’t help the smile that tugged at the corners of her mouth. “To take time off to prepare for pregnancy.”

     

    “I’ve seem to have shed some of those Philly roots,” Bette chuckled despite herself, getting more comfortable in the conversation.

     

    “Well Philly tends to be a war zone these days, it was easier back when you were a child for sure.”

     

    “I don’t think it’s ever easy raising kids,” Bette said honestly. “It took us forever to find her a school we both liked. Tina thinks preschool is supposed to be fun and I think it needs some structure.”

     

    “You remind me a little of your father when you say that,” Maxine offered a kind smile.

     

    “Well Daddy certainly instilled that in me.”

     

    “I do want to say I am sorry for his passing Bette, I know how close you were to him.”

     

    “Knowing what I know now, it makes it a little easier,” Bette admitted. “I know that sounds horrible but the amount of anger I have toward him I am not sure he wouldn’t be in the same spot you are right now.”

    1. At last, Bette is allowing herself to relax with Maxine and just go with the flow. Too bad it takes a family emergency to get to accept the good will of others. She still needs to hear Maxine’s story. This was the first time that anyone had said Melvin had been abusive. I’m not sure Bette understands the extent of Melvin’s abuse. And once she hears it, will she accept that Melvin was not the man she thought he was?

      I love the fact that Maxine called Alice when she knew Kit was not available. Maxine seems to be familiar with what goes on in an emergency room. And she seems to know how to clam Bette down. Good thing Tina is not hurt very bad.

      Good chapter….great story line for this book. I hooked into this story and am anxiously waiting for the next chapter….

      Glad that Tina isn’t that bad injured and that Angelica wasn’t hurt at all.

      Good to see Bette a little bit more relaxed with Maxine and that Maxine seems to respect the boundaries Bette set.

      Loving the way Bette is opening up to listen to Maxine.
      I think she will need a lot of support when she finds out the extent of Melvin’s abuse.
