      “Kit said his passing happened in your home.”   “Yes, and Tina was there for me when he was struggling at the end. Very pregnant, and I think in the end that he made a small gesture in making amends. He actually called her Tina and it shocked both of us a little.”

    “Ouch,” Maxine shook her head. “It saddens me that he missed out on how wonderful she is and just so sweet…”

     

    Bette’s phone vibrated in her pocket as she reached into her jeans to retrieve it. The number on the screen wasn’t one she recognized so she answered it with trepidation.

     

    “Bette Porter,” she leaned into the table and Maxine watched as the color drained from Bette’s face. The conversation was short, it was clear that something was not right. She asked one word questions, but as the conversation continued it was clear Tina was involved.

     

    She got up immediately, fumbling with her blazer to leave The Planet as she hung up her phone.

     

    “Tina and Angie have been in an accident,” Bette panicked as Maxine stood. “They were taken to the hospital and I need to go.”

     

    “Let me drive you Lizzie,” Maxine grabbed her coat to follow Bette. “You’re understandably worried and need to get there safely.”

     

    Bette and Maxine ran out of The Planet together, no protesting coming from Bette, knowing she needed to get to the hospital quickly.

    The emergency room was crowded, and Bette ran in through the ambulance bay as Maxine handed the valet Bette’s keys. Bette was already at the front desk demanding answers and a status on her family.

     

    “I’m Bette Porter, you called about my wife and child being in an accident?”

     

    The nurse began searching the case files when Bette became impatient.

     

    “Can you please tell me what the hell is going on?”

     

    “Bette calm down,” Maxine put her hand on Bette’s shoulder to offer support. “She needs a moment to get Tina’s file.”

     

    “Let me take you back,” the nurse came out of from behind the desk and motioned Bette to follow. “Your daughter is fine, she’s in the peds unit playing in the supervised area.”

    1. At last, Bette is allowing herself to relax with Maxine and just go with the flow. Too bad it takes a family emergency to get to accept the good will of others. She still needs to hear Maxine’s story. This was the first time that anyone had said Melvin had been abusive. I’m not sure Bette understands the extent of Melvin’s abuse. And once she hears it, will she accept that Melvin was not the man she thought he was?

      I love the fact that Maxine called Alice when she knew Kit was not available. Maxine seems to be familiar with what goes on in an emergency room. And she seems to know how to clam Bette down. Good thing Tina is not hurt very bad.

      Good chapter….great story line for this book. I hooked into this story and am anxiously waiting for the next chapter….

      Glad that Tina isn’t that bad injured and that Angelica wasn’t hurt at all.

      Good to see Bette a little bit more relaxed with Maxine and that Maxine seems to respect the boundaries Bette set.

      Looking forward to the next chapter!

      Loving the way Bette is opening up to listen to Maxine.
      I think she will need a lot of support when she finds out the extent of Melvin’s abuse.
