Chapter 29 – The Leaving the Nest Party

Shane: Well, I don’t want to pay big money out for the purpose of teaching the boys how to party. I think they can learn that on their own.
Tina: Shane! They are going to get an education and the social life is a part of that education. This gives them a way to meet new people and develop new interest. It’s a bridge between childhood and adulthood. Besides, those with a college education are more likely to get and maintain a job than those without, regardless of field of study. College is not for everyone. But some people need to experience it to see if it is for them or not. Now what are they studying in community college?
Bobbie: Shay is studying computer science. He is interested in getting in the field of robotics. Jordan wants to get into some medical field. Right now, he is going to study nursing to get an LPN certification. Of course, he is just starting his first year, so we need to wait and see how he does and if he likes what he is studying to know.
Alice: Well, there is a huge demand for nurses. If he gets a four-year degree, he can specialize in a nursing field such as surgery, emergency room, or pediatrics. And with a master’s degree, he could be a physician’s assistant. Every time I go to the doctor, that is the only person I see is the physician’s assistant. Not enough doctors or nurses to meet the needs of the country. Stressful field but you can get a job almost anywhere. And a good paying job at that.
Lynn: And the field of robotics is in its infancy. With an aging population, there are going to be many opportunities for the use of robotics. I know they are working on driverless trucks and cars. And warehouses are installing inventory handling equipment including robots. Then there are the house keeping robots will be a huge industry. Manufacturing robots, material handling robots and so much more. So, knowing how robots are designed, programed and maintained is going to be huge. If that is what interest Shay, he will be in a great field. But a four-year degree would help him advance into design and building rather than into the manufacturing and maintenance areas.
