Chapter 33 – Days of Fun and Then New Haven

Bette: Yeah, that’s what we need to do. If we can do what is right rather than what is easy, we will always be able to hold our heads up and be proud of who we are.

Mary: The biggest problem is knowing what is right. With every decision and choice there are consequences and some are not so pleasant.

Bette:  You are so right Mom. There are no free lunches. Every choice has a cost and a benefit. Every choice brings about a new set of choices and ramifications. So, when we make choices, we need to be deliberate in our process. And if we are confident that what we did was the right thing to do, we cannot keep second guessing ourselves. That will drive us all insane. If our decision turns out to be a mistake, then we must recognize that and do what we can to correct that error. Sometimes, that is just not possible. So, you live with what is and go on. And take this new found knowledge to heart so that you do not continually make the same mistake over and over again.

Tina: Mom, you cannot dwell on the what ifs of your life. You have to move on with the what is.

Bette: Have we seen enough?  Let’s go catch the boat back to Battery Park. Then we will take a walk down Wall Street and on to the 911 Memorial Park.

Tina:  Maybe we can stop in and see that church that was in the movie National Treasure?

Angie: Yeah, that would be neat.

Daniel:  I wonder if there really is a bunch of caverns underneath that church which had the Mason’s treasure in it?

Tina:  No Sweetheart.  That was all fiction. Produce in some Hollywood back lot. But it was a really good story though.

Bette:  Come on guys. Throw away your trash and let’s get moving. Everyone get enough to eat?

Daniel:  Yes Mom.  Burgers and fries are always filling. Those were good fries, too.

Angie: Burgers were good too. Surprisingly so.

    Tina:  Beautiful day, isn’t it?

Mary:  Really is. It’s warm but not overly so. There is a nice sea breeze. Just lovely. I have so enjoyed coming here. It’s so beautiful and such an interesting part of our country’s history. Next time I come to New York, I’m going to want to go visit Ellis Island and see what that is all about.  Who knows, maybe some of our ancestors came through Ellis Island.
