Chapter 33 – Days of Fun and Then New Haven

    Daniel: I love this place….

They finished their breakfast and then caught 2 cabs to Time Square. Time Square with its jumbotron screens with advertising and its lighted signs promoting the various theatre productions and stores in the square.  Time Square was a happy place for people to visit. Full of movement and lights. Bette directed them to toward the tour bus stand while she went and purchased tickets.  They boarded the first opened top bus heading out and started their tour.

The tickets were in reality day passes. Passengers could board the buses at any stop and get off at any stop and then catch a later bus to either proceed on the tours or return to Time Square. The tour left Time Square and headed south and included stops in areas such as China Town, Little Italy, Soho and on to Battery Park. There was a running commentary on the important buildings the bus was passing, and many took pictures. It was a unique tour in that seeing the world above your heads was just as interesting and exciting as the street level which is seen in normal travel through the streets of New York. New York was a city of buildings and people and culture. And no matter how much time one spends in the city, it is absolutely a fascinating place to see the accomplishments of humans.

Bette had signaled for the group to get off at Battery Park. It was still early in day, so they decided to take the boat over to the Statue of Liberty and tour the park, the museum, and the base of the statue. There was café’ which they decided to eat lunch at and enjoy the outdoor dining.  Tina had taken a multitude of pictures. From the island, they could see the replacement building for the twin towers across the bay. Bette had mentioned that this statue was a beautiful work of art in the way it was constructed. Steel girders support and frame covered by sheets of molded copper which were no more than a penny’s width thick. A piece of art work designed and built in France and then shipped to America as a gift. It had been refurbished and repaired two or three times over the more than century it has stood in the harbor.
