Chapter 34 – New Haven to Redondo Beach

Tina:  I’m pretty tired, so I suggest that we all retire to our rooms and do whatever. You can unpack your bag, get your dirty clothes down to the laundry room, watch a movie or television or you can go for a swim in the pool. But I’m planning on retiring for the night. I need to rest from the travel and from all of last week’s excitement. Is that okay with you guys?

Daniel:  Its fine with me. I think I’ll just go to my room. I slept on the plane but I could use some sleep. Now that we have eaten and no particular agenda, I might read or something. But I believe it won’t be long before I’ll go to bed.

Bette: Are you guys feeling okay?

Tina:  Oh, I’m fine. It’s just that travel is not exactly invigorating. I just need a good rest after a long flight.  I could use a shower too.

Bette:  Okay, that’s the plan. Clean up the kitchen and retire to our respective rooms. Dan, I do not know when we will get up tomorrow morning, but if you get to the point you need to eat, well make yourself some toast or something to tide you over. We will cook when we get up. If we are not down by 9:00, call us on the cell. But remember, tomorrow is my last day to sleep late until Saturday. And I am going to take advantage of it.

Tina: We need to get groceries tomorrow. We will discuss that at breakfast. Dan, be thinking about what you might want for dinner this week.

Bette: This is good pizza. Maybe I’m just hungry.

Daniel: We don’t have pizza that often. I think we were just hungry for pizza.

Tina: Well, pizza is not exactly the most nutritious meal you can have. It’s fine to have occasionally but not as a steady diet. You need more fruits and vegetables and limit the number of carbs.

Daniel: Well, we have great meals Mom. They are a lot better than pizza.

Tina:  Thank you son. Okay, are we about finished? I’m going to put this left-over pizza in the fridge. You can eat that for breakfast Daniel if we get up past your breakfast time. It’s only a couple of pieces. Eat it cold or heat it for about 30 seconds in the microwave. But no more than that and don’t burn your mouth on the hot cheese.

Bette: Okay, son, I’m going to say goodnight. Thank you for all your help and we will see you in the morning.

Bette hugged Daniel and kissed him on the head. She whispered to him “I love you son. Sleep well.”

Daniel then went to Tina and hugged her. She too told him she loved him and kissed him on the head. Daniel then said good night and headed upstairs. Bette and Tina went around and check the lights and the doors and then headed upstairs.

Bette decided that unpacking could wait until the morning and invited Tina into the shower. They showered and completed their nightly lotion and then crawled into bed. Within a few minutes, they were both sound asleep.

    1. I hope I’m reading this story years into the future. Bette and Tina as grandparents, three generations living together, where Daniel will go to college, the scenarios are endless. Thanks for your dedication, Martha.

    2. Fans,
Thank you for commenting. There are only a few more chapters in this Volume. I have completed a Volume 3 of this series … and will continue to publish on a regular basis. This volume starts to address the raising of a boy and the onset of puberty and adolescence. These are the challenging years in a persons life and even more so for the parents going through it with them. Now that Angie is away at Yale, she doesn’t have much of a role in my stories until she returns home.

I know that this is not the normal fan fiction. But what I want to show is how important communication is between Bette and Tina. I want to show how important it is for parents to communicate with their children and how important it is to realize that the objective is raise children to be independent, healthy, happy individuals. And so much goes into that. To have a child go from childhood to adulthood is difficult for parents… probably more difficult than the child themselves will ever realize. To come to the realization that you (as a parent) will not be there to give just the right advice and to object to the wrong decision is a tough bridge to cross. That has been a subplot of most of this story… I hope that has come across in my writing. Bette and Tina are strong parents but its not because they hold tight reigns on their children. Angie and Daniel are unique individuals… at least they are in my story.

Thanks for reading and commenting… stay tuned for more…

      • I alway shook my head while watching the parents of my kids’ friends hold a tight reign and made choices for them which nearly always backfired. Made for quite the lesson in our household.
