    Chapter 4

Nyah hummed. “And you? You ever wish she was out here?”

Bette hesitated, knowing there was no right answer. “She struggles with the mindless killings. She is not as resilient as I am, perhaps.”

Nyah nodded, as if that confirmed something for her. Then, after a beat, she added, “It’s rare, you know. Finding someone who is capable of withstanding the fight.” The captain stole a quick sideways glance at her passenger before she continued. “You and I… we don’t hesitate when the call comes in. Not everyone understands that.”

Bette didn’t answer right away. There was truth in Nyah’s words, but it wasn’t as simple as that. She knew exactly where Nyah was steering the conversation, and she wasn’t about to be led there so easily.

Nyah, undeterred, tilted her head slightly. “You ever wonder about my life, Bette?”

Bette raised a brow, playing along. “You’re not exactly private.”

It was true that ever since her arrival at the foundation, Nyah had had a habit of slipping easily into the rough camaraderie of the team, bantering like one of the lads, never shying away from a drink or a dirty joke. She had been very candid about her life, about past lovers, about the risks she took, about the things she’d lost along the way. She called it part of her charm.

Nyah laughed, rich and knowing. “Maybe. But you still never ask.”

Bette smirked, shifting in her seat.

Nyah’s voice dropped just slightly, deliberate. “Or maybe you don’t want to know the answer.”

Bette turned her head then, studying her. “You think I’d be surprised?”

Nyah flicked her eyes to Bette, the corner of her lips tugging upward. “Maybe. Maybe not.”

Bette held her gaze a moment longer before tilting her head. “Alright, I’ll bite.” She let her voice dip just enough to mirror Nyah’s playfulness. “What is the answer?”

Nyah’s smirk deepened, but there was something else in her expression now—something assessing. She had expected Bette to deflect, maybe even shut the conversation down. But this? This was interesting.

She exhaled, flexing her fingers on the wheel. “The answer is… I don’t waste time on things that don’t matter.” A pause, then her voice softened just slightly. “And I don’t chase things that don’t want to be caught.”

    Comments

    1. Bette seems to take on a clichéd heteronormal role in their relationship. Get the wife pregnant and then return to your “calling”, follow “higher causes” and leave the wife and child at home to manage the farm? What did she expect from Tina when she married her? Bette is admirably steadfast and passionate in her fight against poachers. But that boarders on highly egoistic now that she has a family of her own. Hopefully Tina finds the strength to talk to Bette.

Hope B will recognize that she’s being manipulated by Nyla. By admiring and following Nyla Bette could lose her humanity. I don’t like that woman. No respect for other people and their relationships. I think Nyla is jaded by all the violence she witnessed and could easyly cross a line. Hopefully Bette comes to her senses.
To make things worse: Bette was recognized by the bad guy and became an easy target. What if they come to retalliate and attack Tina and Augustine? Or Angelica?

Kins, you have me at the edge of my seat waiting for the next part.

    2. That was intense. I pray that the poachers won’t attack the people at the orphanage even though I have a feeling that is whats gonna happen.
And I don’t know if Bette is that oblivious that Nyah is definitely going after her after those comments.
Can’t wait for the next chapter.

    3. I just stumbled upon this amazing story a few days ago. What a gift! I love your writing. I litterally can not get enough of it. You weave such a compelling tale I feel like am right there with them….
I think Bette’s fascination with Nyah has to do with the fact that in a parallel universe she could have been just like her…. I just don’t see this version of Bette being unfaithful to Tina in any way shape or form. She’s just being her clueless dorky self at the moment lol…. And Tina needs to speak up for herself and stop being such a doormat…. Such GREAT use of history Kins…
      I literally can’t wait for more…
      PS: More baby Angelica please

    4. Nyah is a snake! Lying in wake for her prey. Bette has gotten loss in the her passion not knowing that passion comes from her love of Tina and Angelica!nHopefully she will realize that before too late. Thank you for bringing this challenging story to the site. So good!
