Chapter 4
Nyah lowered the binoculars, exchanging a look with Bette. No alarms. No signs they suspected anyone was near.
The team moved into position, bodies low to the ground, their uniforms blending into the golden grass and the gnarled roots of the trees. The morning light shifted against the fabric, turning them into little more than shadows against the land. The rustling of leaves and the occasional snap of a twig were lost beneath the waking savannah—a distant elephant trumpeting, the buzz of insects, the first chattering calls of vervet monkeys in the trees.
Bette exhaled slowly, fingers tightening around her rifle. The sun edged higher, the heat rising off the earth in shimmering waves.
They were closing in, when the signal came like the snap of a twig—Nyah’s sharp hand gesture, fingers slicing through the air.
The team exploded from the brush.
The world narrowed to the clash of movement, the heavy pounding of boots on dry earth, the shouts of the team and the startled cries of the poachers as the ambush swallowed them whole in matter of seconds.
One man barely had time to reach for his rifle before a ranger’s shoulder slammed into him, sending him sprawling backward. Another lunged for the fallen weapon, but a swift kick to the ribs sent him reeling. The third, the one with the machete, reacted differently—his instincts sharper, more violent. His blade flashed in the morning sun as he pivoted, eyes wild.
Bette barely had time to brace.
He was on her in an instant, swinging with brutal force. She twisted away, the blade whistling past her ribs, close enough to cut the air near her skin. She fell back, hands scrambling in the dirt, the sheer speed of the attack throwing her off balance.
The poacher snarled, his face twisted with the kind of fury that came from desperation. He swung again.
Bette barely ducked. The machete’s edge clipped the strap of her rifle, sending it skidding away.
Too close. Too damn close.
She rolled as he came for her again, dust and grit biting into her skin. Then, just as he lifted the blade high for another strike—
A gunshot.
The sound cracked through the morning air, and the poacher jolted, his whole body stiffening as a bullet slammed into the dirt inches from his feet.

Bette seems to take on a clichéd heteronormal role in their relationship. Get the wife pregnant and then return to your “calling”, follow “higher causes” and leave the wife and child at home to manage the farm? What did she expect from Tina when she married her? Bette is admirably steadfast and passionate in her fight against poachers. But that boarders on highly egoistic now that she has a family of her own. Hopefully Tina finds the strength to talk to Bette.
Hope B will recognize that she’s being manipulated by Nyla. By admiring and following Nyla Bette could lose her humanity. I don’t like that woman. No respect for other people and their relationships. I think Nyla is jaded by all the violence she witnessed and could easyly cross a line. Hopefully Bette comes to her senses.
To make things worse: Bette was recognized by the bad guy and became an easy target. What if they come to retalliate and attack Tina and Augustine? Or Angelica?
Kins, you have me at the edge of my seat waiting for the next part.
That was intense. I pray that the poachers won’t attack the people at the orphanage even though I have a feeling that is whats gonna happen.
And I don’t know if Bette is that oblivious that Nyah is definitely going after her after those comments.
Can’t wait for the next chapter.
I just stumbled upon this amazing story a few days ago. What a gift! I love your writing. I litterally can not get enough of it. You weave such a compelling tale I feel like am right there with them….
I think Bette’s fascination with Nyah has to do with the fact that in a parallel universe she could have been just like her…. I just don’t see this version of Bette being unfaithful to Tina in any way shape or form. She’s just being her clueless dorky self at the moment lol…. And Tina needs to speak up for herself and stop being such a doormat…. Such GREAT use of history Kins…
I literally can’t wait for more…
PS: More baby Angelica please
Bette is being supremely naive. It’d be a shame if a lion ate Nyah.
Nyah is a snake! Lying in wake for her prey. Bette has gotten loss in the her passion not knowing that passion comes from her love of Tina and Angelica!nHopefully she will realize that before too late. Thank you for bringing this challenging story to the site. So good!
