    Chapter 4

The air inside the truck thickened, but Bette didn’t look away. “Good philosophy.”

Nyah hummed, amused. “It’s worked so far.”

Bette let a small smirk form, but before she could reply, the radio crackled to life.

“Approaching the target. One minute out.”

Just like that, the moment was gone, swallowed by the approaching mission. Nyah shifted gears, her focus snapping back to the road.

Bette turned her gaze forward, exhaling as the savannah stretched endlessly ahead.

    Let her wait.

The truck rolled to a stop a safe distance from the site; its engine cut off a short distance ago to ensure a quiet approach. The morning air was already thick with the scent of dust and sun-warmed grass, the landscape bathed in golden light. A lone hornbill flapped lazily from a nearby tree, disturbed even by their silent arrival. The team stepped onto the cracked ground, their movements precise, their uniforms blending seamlessly with the dry earth and tangled brush around them, muted greens and browns designed to make them part of the land itself.

Nyah knelt, using a stick to trace a rough map in the dirt. “They’re just beyond that ridge,” she murmured. “Three men, maybe more. The intel we received from aerial surveillance suggest they haven’t moved yet.” No one needed to ask what they were guarding; rhino horn, tusk, another piece of Africa stolen for greed.

Bette crouched beside her, scanning the terrain ahead. Sunlight filtered through the thorny branches of a fever tree, dappling the ground in shifting patterns. “We split. Two flanking left, two right. Stay low. Wait for my signal.”

A ranger raised a pair of binoculars, adjusting the focus before passing them to Nyah. She lifted them to her eyes, studying the camp. Overturned crates. A rusted jerry can. A fire reduced to glowing embers. Three men lounged nearby, their rifles propped against a fallen log. One was sharpening a machete, the rhythmic scrape of metal against stone carried over the whispering wind. Another stretched, rubbing his face, still shaking off sleep.

And then there was their chatter, low, lazy voices murmuring, words carried by the breeze. One of them chuckled dryly, his tone edged with the casual arrogance of men who didn’t know they were being watched. Another grumbled something about money, about waiting too long. The third spat into the dirt, his voice rough with impatience.

    Comments

    1. Bette seems to take on a clichéd heteronormal role in their relationship. Get the wife pregnant and then return to your “calling”, follow “higher causes” and leave the wife and child at home to manage the farm? What did she expect from Tina when she married her? Bette is admirably steadfast and passionate in her fight against poachers. But that boarders on highly egoistic now that she has a family of her own. Hopefully Tina finds the strength to talk to Bette.

Hope B will recognize that she’s being manipulated by Nyla. By admiring and following Nyla Bette could lose her humanity. I don’t like that woman. No respect for other people and their relationships. I think Nyla is jaded by all the violence she witnessed and could easyly cross a line. Hopefully Bette comes to her senses.
To make things worse: Bette was recognized by the bad guy and became an easy target. What if they come to retalliate and attack Tina and Augustine? Or Angelica?

Kins, you have me at the edge of my seat waiting for the next part.

    2. That was intense. I pray that the poachers won’t attack the people at the orphanage even though I have a feeling that is whats gonna happen.
And I don’t know if Bette is that oblivious that Nyah is definitely going after her after those comments.
Can’t wait for the next chapter.

    3. I just stumbled upon this amazing story a few days ago. What a gift! I love your writing. I litterally can not get enough of it. You weave such a compelling tale I feel like am right there with them….
I think Bette’s fascination with Nyah has to do with the fact that in a parallel universe she could have been just like her…. I just don’t see this version of Bette being unfaithful to Tina in any way shape or form. She’s just being her clueless dorky self at the moment lol…. And Tina needs to speak up for herself and stop being such a doormat…. Such GREAT use of history Kins…
      I literally can’t wait for more…
      PS: More baby Angelica please

    4. Nyah is a snake! Lying in wake for her prey. Bette has gotten loss in the her passion not knowing that passion comes from her love of Tina and Angelica!nHopefully she will realize that before too late. Thank you for bringing this challenging story to the site. So good!
