    Chapter 4

(Tina) What about you? Where did you grow up?

    (Bette) Philadelphia

    Tina nods.

(Tina) I’ve been there a lot. One of the first films I worked on was filmed there part of the time, so I travelled back and forth from New York. I liked it very much

(Bette) Mmmm, not me so much, I was pretty keen to leave

(Tina) Was that Philadelphia’s fault? Queer kid desperate to shake their home town is a pretty common story, it’s certainly mine

Bette looks over at her and Tina smiles.

(Tina) Sorry, I have a habit of asking too many questions. You can tell me when I’m drifting into territory you’re not comfortable talking about

Bette looks at her curiously for a moment and then shakes her head.

    (Bette) It’s OK

She sighs and has a sip of beer.

(Bette) You’re right, I shouldn’t unfairly blame Philadelphia

They smile at each other and Tina shrugs.

    (Tina) That’s all I’m saying

Bette smiles and has a sip of beer. She sighs and looks towards the bottle.

(Bette) My family situation wasn’t ideal. Homophobic father, and everything that comes with that. I needed to get out on my own and start actually being myself

(Tina nods) I’m a similar story. And I haven’t looked back yet

They smile at each other. Their attention is then pulled to the pavilion as the musicians take to the stage.

They sit together taking in the music, and after a while Tina turns her attention to Bette. She looks over and examines her, noticing her cringing slightly as particular notes are hit and a subtle look of confusion in her eyes. Tina smiles as she watches her and Bette eventually notices her and looks over with a frown. A smile forms on her face as she takes in Tina’s expression.

    (Bette) What?

(Tina smiles) This isn’t your thing at all is it?

Bette raises her eyebrows and Tina smiles at her. Bette laughs and gestures with her head back towards the stage.

    (Bette) I’m fine, pay attention

Tina’s smile broadens as she continues watching Bette, whose attention is focused back on the band. Tina leans in closer to her and speaks into her ear.

(Tina) For the record, I don’t think this music is any good

Bette turns her head towards her.

    (Bette) No?

Tina raises her eyebrows and shakes her head, and Bette smiles.

    (Bette) Oh thank God

    Tina laughs.

(Bette) I’ve been desperately trying to think of something positive to say for the walk back to the car

Tina smiles at her and then looks back towards the stage.

(Tina) I honestly don’t think I’ve ever heard anything worse

Bette shakes her head and frowns as she also looks back to the stage.

(Bette) Me neither, I don’t even understand what they’re doing

    Tina laughs.

(Tina) Maybe they’re just random people who jumped up there. Security will probably escort them off stage any minute

    Bette laughs.

    (Bette) Hopefully

Bette smiles over at her and after a moment Tina turns to her and meets her eyes. They hold each other’s gaze for a long moment, both smiling. Tina takes a breath before speaking.

(Tina) We don’t have to stay, shall we get going?

Bette looks at her for another moment.

    (Bette) Are you coming over?

Tina raises her eyebrows and then smiles back at her.

    (Tina) If I’m invited

    (Bette smiles) You’re invited

    They smile at each other.

    (Tina nods) Sure

    1. This non-dating thing is unique… no assumptions, no obligations, just in the moment. Yet we the readers can see that they are growing rather fond of each other. Would love to read more…
