Chapter 4 – The Doctor Visit

Bette took a sip of her drink as did Paris.  Paris was in a state of shock.

Bette:  Daddy’s will is in two parts. The first part was a series of trust which had been set up many years before with a designated beneficiary and rules on how each would operate.  The there was a trust for Kit, one for me, one for David, one for Mary Southerland and one for you.  Mine, David’s and Kit’s were distributed 18 years ago. Yours and Mary’s still exist and still hold whatever assets they hold. I presume that they can still be distributed as soon as the legitimate beneficiary claims it.  The second part consist of the residual of his estate not including the trust.  He leaves one third to Kit, one third to Tina and I and one third to the unknown child of Melvin W. Porter and Mary Southerland who isn’t Elizabeth Maxine Porter.  All beneficiaries must make a claim by August 31st.  If no claim is made, it rolls over to the other two legatees. Then it has some language about claiming the trust. The point is, you must make a claim to get your portion of the estate – your rightful portion.

Paris:  Oh my god Bette! I do not know what to say.  You and Kit could have kept quiet and split that money for yourselves.

Bette:  You know better than that! We could never deny you what is rightfully yours. We were concerned that you were not included and we were trying to figure out how to give you a gift without giving a whole bunch more taxes to Uncle Sam.  Fortunately, you are provided for, so our tax problem disappeared. Kit and I are determined that you will get your share.  Now here are two copies of everything we received.  You need to get a lawyer to help you handle this. Kit says she will do whatever she needs to do to make sure you get your fair share. And so will I.

Paris:  What do you think I will have to do?

Bette:  You will probably have to take a DNA test and Kit and I will have to submit one also.  That will prove that Melvin Porter is definitely your father.  Mary will have to take one and a comparison of yours and hers and mine will show she is definitely your mother. That should be enough proof that you are the daughter of Mary Southerland and Melvin Potter.
