Chapter 4 – The Doctor Visit

Bette takes another sip of her drink. Paris has finished hers.

Bette:  How about another round?  Paris, do you have a lawyer here in California?

    Paris:  Yeah, Joyce Wischnia.

Bette:  You call her and see her tomorrow. You have two copies in your hands so give her one. Tell her that both Kit and I stand ready to cooperate in any way we can to make this go smoothly. Talk to her about a DNA test and if she can arrange for that to happen quickly for all three of us.  And you are going to have to ask Mother for a DNA test. You may ask Joyce to represent her as well. Joyce may not want to, unless Mary is willing to sign away any conflict of interest. Joyce needs to represent you in any case. Mary will have to get her own lawyer.  You have the biggest share of the pie.  Mary can prove who she is. You can prove who you are. The hard part is proving you are indeed the daughter of Mary Southerland and Melvin Porter.

Paris:  Do you think Mother knew that Melvin knew about me?

Bette:  I thought about that a lot and I discussed it with Tina. Let me ask you when did you move to England to go to school.

Paris: I went to England when I was 14 years old and went to boarding school in middle school and high school.  I got this scholarship to study abroad when I entered some essay contest. I remember how ecstatic my mother was for the opportunity for me to study abroad. I was over the moon. I really enjoyed my years in school. But I missed my mother.  I would see her during Christmas break and during the summer. She always made a trip to see me in the spring. I did well in school and then got a scholarship to Cambridge.  Mother was beside herself.  Such a prestigious school and she wasn’t going to have to come up with a penny for me to go. Anyway, I love Mother.  But as time went on, I just wasn’t as close to her as I had been when I was a child. The distance and the lack contact and personal moments had come between us. I think that was why I had some of my problems with drugs and alcohol. This is my last one. I’m going to make Jeanette drive home.
