    (Bette) I know, I will. You don’t seem to mind them (Tina shrugs) I like them Bette looks at her suspiciously. (Bette) You’re weird Tina smiles. (Tina) Well to be fair, as a journalist I’m a bit on the periphery, a spectator. I can imagine it’s not as much fun if you’re amongst it all,

    (Bette) I know, I will. You don’t seem to mind them

    (Tina shrugs) I like them

    Bette looks at her suspiciously.

    (Bette) You’re weird

    Tina smiles.

    (Tina) Well to be fair, as a journalist I’m a bit on the periphery, a spectator. I can imagine it’s not as much fun if you’re amongst it all, actually trying to work the room

    (Bette) Yes I’m not sure fun is often associated with it

    (Tina smiles) There must have been a fair share of politics involved as the District Attorney?

    (Bette) Yes, but this is certainly a step up

    Tina takes her hand and strokes it lightly.

    (Tina) You’ll settle into it.

    She studies Bette for a moment.

    (Tina) I know we can’t talk about the details of your day, but you’re ok?

    (Bette) Yes, I’m fine. It’s just one of those days that makes we wonder what I was thinking getting into this

    (Tina) You’ll have a few of those so I hear

    (Bette) I guess. (Takes a sip of wine) I think I’m realising I was pretty naive in my thinking about what it was going to be like. I thought the rewarding side might outweigh the bullshit, but it’s not even close.

    They sit in silence for a moment before Tina puts her wine down on the coffee table and focuses back on Bette.

    (Tina) I know it must be hard but we need people like you doing this. We need your intelligence and your heart, and your kindness. You just being there challenges the bullshit. You might not outweigh it but you’re putting up a fight, and I’m so proud of you for doing that.

    Bette smiles at her.

    (Bette) Thank you for saying that

    (Tina shrugs) It’s the truth.

    They smile at each other for a moment, Bette reaching out for Tina’s hand.

    (Bette) And you’ll be there on Saturday at least

    (Tina smiles) I will

     

    Saturday evening, Bette and Tina are both attending the benefit, and involved in separate conversations. Bette watches Tina across the room. Though Bette is the politician it is all very recent for her, and really it is Tina who is more accustomed to these political events. Bette watches her as she effortlessly moves around the room – charming, intelligent, engaging. She sees how people respond to her, and watches as various people seek Tina out to talk to. Bette guesses that they are wanting to spend time with a genuine person amongst all the fakery and agenda in the room.

    3. Seriously, I wish I’d seen this gf when it was 20 chapters in so I could read and read and read it. In all the chapters, I’m sad when I can see the chapter is coming to an end.

    6. Wow…. actually that ending scene was really hot… They are falling in love again so hard…. Bette is not liking her job which sooner or later she will blame it for keeping her away from Tina. If Tina give the slightest hint that she wants to get back together, Bette is in a place that she would give up her career in a heartbeat to have her back. She gave up Tina to have a job, She will not make that mistake (her words) again. Jobs can be gratifying and ego boosting, but they are never permenant. A partner is permenant and life fulfilling if you find the right one. And they have. Keep it going…

        katynd, I love all the references where you mention how Tina “studies Bette”. This is Y she knows she can show up late and lay her hands and seductive words in Bette’s ears. WoW!!!

        She took Bette’s fears (previous lover(s) and shot them down fast.

        • And another thing . . . Tina KNEW that Bette would be cherning in sour bile at how she responded to her own observations and mis-placed words.

          Tina was wise to go to Bette and demonstrate how Bette was responding like “the Bette of old”.

          Bette has always seen Tina as incredibly desirable and figures everybody else does too!!! Poor Bette
