Chapter 77 – Flattery Will Get You Everywhere

Joyce played coy before dropping Kit’s hand and waving her off. “Aww, please, flattery will get you everywhere, Ms. Porter. Tell me something, is there a Mr. Porter?” Joyce inquired. Angus cleared his throat in a loud and obvious manner which only served to get Joyce’s attention for a quick moment. “Need a throat lozenge, my friend?”

“No, I’m good.” Angus said as he again cleared his throat.

“Um, no. No Mr. Porter at the moment.” Kit answered shyly. “And you can call me Kit, Joyce.”

“If that’s what you prefer, then Kit it is.” Joyce made her way back to the head of the table opposite Bette’s chair. She lowered herself gracefully into her chair and slapped the table with both hands. “Alright, first things first, my friends. Mr. Preston, if you could excuse my clients and I for one moment, my lovely assistant, Lydia, is waiting outside for you with an ice cold, bottled water that has your name on it.” She winked at James as he looked over to Bette like a lost little boy.

When he received a slight nod and a reassuring smile from Bette, he pushed his chair away from the table and stood up. “Um, of course.” He cleared his throat and buttoned his nicely tailored, navy suit jacket before walking towards the door Joyce had entered just minutes before.

    “Thank you kindly, sir.”

Joyce watched him as he made his way out of the conference room. Once he had been greeted by Lydia and the door had closed, she again turned her attention to Bette and the band.

“Nice kid.” She said as she motioned toward the door with her head. “I read his proposed contract. I like it. Is he the one you folks want as your agent?”

    “Yeah.”

    “Totally.”

    “He’s pretty cool, yup.”

    “I like James.”

    “Uh-huh, absolutely.”

And one nodding head was the total response from the band.

“Bette?” Joyce waited to see if the brunette concurred.

“I agree with the band and with you, Joyce. James’ provisions are very fair to the band and seem on the up and up.”

“Great!” Joyce opened up the blue portfolio that was set on the table in front of her and pulled a pen from the inside pocket of her black suit jacket. She scribbled her signature on the blank line above her name and passed the document to Carmen who was sitting immediately to her left. “Ok, my dear. Find your name and sign away.”

The document made it’s way around the table until all the Stouts had signed above their printed name. Once the contract made it back to Joyce, she smiled and held it up. “Your first autograph as a band with representation.”

The band members cheered at the milestone, all of them grinning and gleeful. Their entertainment lawyer took the contract over to the printer on the other side of the room and generated a copy for each member as well as Bette. After she stapled them, rather than distribute them, she slipped them all back into her portfolio and sat back down in her seat.

“We’ll let him sweat it out for a few minutes before we give him the good news.” She said with an evil chuckle as she winked at Kit again. The blush returned to the lead singer’s cheeks as she looked down shyly.

“Alright, so let’s talk record deals.” Joyce clapped and rubbed her hands together before fishing for another packet from a second portfolio on the table.

    1. Joyce is such a flirt!!!

I liked her in the L Word!!!

After next week only one chapter ????, ok only if you promise that the chapters have at least 7 pages, one for every day ????

      Thanks for the updates!

      • I thought it would be funny to have Joyce overtly flirt with Kit much to Angus’s chagrin. She’s just too fun to write like that.

And no promises that the single chapters will be lengthy. Especially since they are already written. ????

    2. Joyce really is hilarious! Hitting on Kit. LOL
I enjoy her scences. Always funny though intelligent, sometimes a little too blunt but thouroughly honest.
In the show I didn’t like her when she was hitting on Tina but it was great how she got T + B to get their act together and come to a less aggressive solution for the separation and child care.

Thank you, MeLL, for this week’s postings. A pleasure to read as always :-)

How’s your car btw? All good again?

      • Car is back on the road so all good there.

I felt like since they are in the same general age bracket, that it would be funny to have Joyce flirt with Kit while Angus steams in the corner. I did enjoy playing with her character in this fic.

    3. What, you really let us pending with this unfinished business scene ? And in top of that, your awful news about only 14 chapters left ? Really, dear MeLL, I didn’t figure you as being such a Machiavelian – even sadistic ! Here ist my most indignant and saddened pout…

    4. At least I can read again this adorable scene with our two favorite lovebirds and laugh once more with the gang’s banters… and Joyce’s irresistible nerve with Kit ! Your Bette is truly intoxicating, by the way, I’m more than ever addicted,
