    Chapter 8

Shane looks at her for a moment.

    (Shane) So, Santorini?

    Bette shrugs.

(Bette) I think she’d been there before. Had maybe spent a bit of time there. She knew out of the way places, and had a rapport with the staff that was too familiar for a once off fleeting visit

(Shane) You never discussed if she’d been there before?

    Bette looks at her.

    (Bette) No

Shane furrows her brow and nods.

    (Bette) What?

    Shane smiles and shrugs.

(Shane) I don’t know, it seems like you didn’t talk about anything much

Bette smiles and looks to her drink. She has a sip and then focuses back on Shane and smiles.

(Bette) You’re wondering how I could be so affected by someone when we know nothing about each other?

Shane shrugs and has a sip of beer, and Bette smiles.

(Bette) If we had had those conversations, I would have lied, and so would she have. I would have probably told her about my life here – this life we’ve fabricated. Given her that name, said I run a gallery

    Shane nods.

(Bette) It was refreshing not doing that. Other than you lot she’s the first person I’ve met in I can’t remember how long that I haven’t lied to. In years actually

    She shrugs.

(Bette) And so in a strange way I think I was myself with her. She got to know the actual me. And I sort of thought it was the same for her

Shane has a sip of beer and then smiles at her.

    (Shane) Until she robbed you

Bette sighs as she picks up her glass.

    (Bette) Until she robbed me

Shane continues smiling at her, and Bette shrugs.

(Shane) There’s really nothing at all you know about her?

Bette raises her eyebrows and sighs.

(Bette) Assuming anything she told me was true?

Shane shrugs and Bette looks at her for a moment.

(Bette) She likes obscure film festivals. Though presumably attends them somewhere outside of the US. She hasn’t been here in a long time

Bette has a sip of her wine and thinks for a moment.

    (Bette) She likes gardening

    Shane raises her eyebrows.

(Bette) Though I’m still not sure I buy that one

She picks up the wine bottle from the bench and tops up her glass.

(Bette) Lotus flowers she definitely likes, I’m sure of that

Shane furrows her brow and nods, and Bette has a sip of wine.

(Bette) And I know the name of her favourite author

    Shane rubs her forehead.

    (Shane) Anything else?

(Bette) She’s not particularly scared of bears, and has a mother. Or did have, at some point

Bette shrugs and has a sip of wine, and Shane raises her eyebrows.

    (Shane) That’s it?

Bette nods, and Shane nods slowly and has a sip of beer.

(Shane) OK yeah, Santorini is probably your best bet then

They sit in silence for a moment, and Bette has a sip of wine. Shane looks to her.

(Shane) Even if you’re right that she’ll return there you have no idea when. You could go to all this effort and then miss her by a day either side

(Bette shrugs) It’s worth the risk for me. It’s the only chance I have of finding her. We’ve exhausted all other avenues

Shane raises her eyebrows and nods.

    (Shane) She’s good

    Bette shrugs.

(Bette) I’ll stay two weeks. A week either side of the day I met her

Shane looks at her for a moment and then raises her eyebrows and sighs.

(Shane) Well, watch your back. You’ve got no idea who she is

    1. So… Bette returns to the scene of the crime to try to find her mysterious lover. This lover hid who she was so effectively… surely she wouldn’t be silly enough to come back to Santorini on the anniversary of the crime? That is unless she wanted to be found….

Thanks for the chapter and look forward to more.

    2. Hmm, if Tina’s behavior changed on the last day/night after their sea ride, maybe someone on the Helena’s boat recognized Bette and Helena instructed Tina to do what she did…
How exciting! Could you bring forward the next updateHow exciting! Could you bring forward the next update It’s hard to have to wait to see what happens

    3. Back to Santorini? Hmm. Interesting! I do wonder who was on the phone with Tina in the previous chapter right before the theft. Maybe Tina was herself with Bette. Maybe someone ordered her to rob Bette. It’s lovely how Bette says she didn’t have to hide while being with Tina. Isn’t it sad that she has no person to trust completely? No loved one.
Looking forward to the next chapter :)
