It took me a long time, and many, many relationships, before I met Tina, and, even then, I found I wasn’t ready for her, and for everything else. I thought I was, but,” Bette was continuing when they heard

I thought I was, but,” Bette was continuing when they heard a cry from behind them.

    “Jade! Jade!! There you are, baby!”

    They both turned to see Ali waving wildly about twenty five feet away, from the foot of the small hill that they were on top off.

    Jade smiled at her girlfriend’s trademark exuberance, and started to respond to her, “Hi! I was talking to Bette and Tina, earlier, and …”

    She stopped talking, and the smile on her face froze when she laid eyes on the woman walking right behind Ali.

    She realized her breathing slowed and her head spun slightly. She lost track of time, and everything else around her. She tried to swallow but her throat was bone dry. As the woman drew closer there was a part of Jade that realized Ali was introducing them to each other.

    “Hi! Jade, is it? Beautiful. Suits you,” a low, sexy voice cut through the other voices and whistle of a fresh breeze that suddenly whipped up around them.

    Jade’s heart slammed to a stop.

    What.

    The.

    Who.

    Is?

    Where

    Did

    She?

    The world was spinning in the background but, paradoxically, the woman standing in front of her came across as crystal clear. And then suddenly, in Jade’s peripheral vision the image of a scarf interrupted them. It had been unloosened from the woman’s creamy neck by the wind, and so Jade snapped her arm out to snatch it out of the air before it could fly away forever.

    “Quick reflexes there!” a man’s voice said, and for the first time, Jade realized that there were other people around them.   His arm was casually drawn over the woman’s shoulders and she was leaning slightly against him. He dropped a kiss on her hair and she smiled up at him quickly. A stone dropped in the pit of Jade’s stomach. Their private moment was broken.

    Ali was saying as she moved to Jade’s side, opposite from where Bette now stood, and was drawing her arm around Jade’s waist, “I know what you’re thinking, baby.   She looks just like that model in the Herb Ritts photo that we were studying in class, right?”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
