    “Oh, I think I know the photo you’re referring to!” Bette exclaimed softly, and then turned to look at Rian more closely. “And you’re right, Ali! She’s a spitting image of one of those models!” Rian finally looked away from Jade and smiled at the stunning brunette. What’s she talking about? She could be a

    “Oh, I think I know the photo you’re referring to!” Bette exclaimed softly, and then turned to look at Rian more closely. “And you’re right, Ali! She’s a spitting image of one of those models!”

    Rian finally looked away from Jade and smiled at the stunning brunette. What’s she talking about? She could be a model herself, this one!

    “Sorry, Rian … you must get that all the time, huh?” Bette added and smiled back, understanding how Jade could suddenly feel captured by this fellow brunette, who sported a fetching slew of blonde tresses that highlighted parts of her lush, flowing hair.

    “Not always,” Rian answered humbly. She self-consciously tucked her hair behind her ears. “So were you both taking a photography class or something?” Rian asked, trying to change the subject, as she looked again at Jade.

    “Ah, no. We each cross-enrolled in one of RISD’s classes last semester, something on 20th century Art, Architecture, and Design,” Ali started, her eyes narrowing now as she looked at Jade. “Where we met actually.”

    She squeezed her girlfriend’s waist possessively.

    “Oh, so you went to Salve Regina also?” the man asked. Jade remembered that Ali had mentioned his name. Something like a Max or Mac or …

    “Ah, no, again. Jade goes to Brown, and I was in Salve Regina,” Ali answered, unsure whether her chronically shy, now obviously distracted girlfriend would answer the man’s question.

    “So you just graduated also, Jade?” Rian asked softly, unwilling to let those green eyes wander away from her, despite the rising tense signals she was picking up from Ali.

    “No,” Jade answered after clearing her throat. “I’m an incoming senior …”

    “And I’m seriously considering that job in Providence, just to stay near her!” Ali cut in, as she squeezed Jade’s waist again, and looked expectantly at her girlfriend.

    An awkward silence fell on the group when Jade didn’t pick up on the cue.

    Bette asked after a beat, and flashed him a 1000 watt smile, “So Max are you the groom’s best man? Seeing you’re his brother and all. Just like Ali here is the maid of honor ….” Poor guy seems to be the only one who’s not seeing things happening here.

    Max smiled back at Bette, a flicker of interest crossing his eyes, and then laughed and answered, “Hmm.. no. My brother wouldn’t entrust me with that. He chose his actual best friend for the honors.”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
