    Jade handed the scarf back to the woman, who was now staring back at her with big, piercing blue eyes, restoring their private moment. With a small smile, Jade murmured as they continued to stare at each other, “Here you go, umm….”

    “My name’s Rian,” the goddess answered, with a teasing smile, as if to remind her that Ali had just introduced them. “But not Ryan with a “y” … it’s Rian with an “i.”

    “Rian with an “i”, got it,” Jade said softly with a silly smile on her face.

    “Thanks for snatching that from the air,” Rian continued, still with that teasing smile. “Would have hated to lose this one.”

    “Hmm… of course … it matches your eyes,” Jade answered softly, unable to wipe the silly smile from her face.

    “And it was my grandmother’s” Rian added, licking her lips as she eyed the tall, definitely sexy, despite-her-lean-frame, woman that she felt inexplicably drawn to. I have never seen anyone like her before – this combination of cute boy, slightly mannish mannerisms, but pretty face, enviably clear skin, skin that was oh so soft when she touched my hand with hers, endearingly shy … “Something of an heirloom, you might say,” Rian continued. “I also have an emerald green one … which you would do justice to, actually.” She winked at Jade.

    Jade tried to look away but couldn’t, feeling trapped, knowing she was captured by piercing blue eyes that weren’t letting her go.

    Bette saw what was happening. And something clicked in her head when Ali looked from Jade to Rian and back again, confusedly. What is going on with them?

    “Herb Ritts photo?” the brunette asked, thinking she had to say something.

    “Jade?” she prompted after a beat, and then gently touched Jade’s elbow.

    Jade was still caught in the intense eye-exchange with Rian, but she answered, “Umm… it was a photo he’d published in 1989 of five of the top models at that time. Part of his work on nudes. It’s still considered a groundbreaking photo, an iconic one that’s been replicated by others through the decades that followed. We were studying it to better understand his ability to abstract the body through compositions and angles that drew out not only beauty, but other qualities of the human body, like strength and poise…”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
