    “The chemistry between you two fairly crackles, actually,” Jade interrupted shyly. Bette smiled at her again. Nice that she’s being so forthcoming with her thoughts now. There must be something in this topic that she’s been thinking about. “So, yeah. We did always fit well together at some level … but that’s just the chemistry

    Bette smiled at her again. Nice that she’s being so forthcoming with her thoughts now. There must be something in this topic that she’s been thinking about.

    “So, yeah. We did always fit well together at some level … but that’s just the chemistry part. The other parts … emotions, our hearts and minds, our hopes and dreams, interests, personalities, even our souls, if you will … all those took a while, and a lot of work, and well, pain and heartache, to fit just as well.”

    Jade raised her eyebrows again.

    “Yeah … I’m sure she and I would be able to give you and other girl couples a lot of advice in that area,” Bette said slowly, probing with her eyes into the shy, shuttered emerald greens that met hers. “Building a relationship, even one that’s grounded on “fairly crackling” chemistry, is not easy…” she paused.

    “Is there something in particular that you’re mulling over?” she asked Jade softly after a minute. “Can I help?”

    The green eyes shifted down to look at those scuffed Chuck Los again.

    “Jade, one thing I know now — when it works, and everything falls into place,” Bette said quietly, “and everything in you tells you that she’s the one, don’t be afraid.  It feels like there’s no net below you, that’s true, and therefore could be the most dangerous thing in the world to risk doing. But … it also feels like flying, Jade. So reach for it, take a running start, jump off the cliff, and when you grasp each other, hold on! Don’t ever take it for granted.”

    Jade’s eyes flew up and looked searchingly into Bette’s, a million questions swirling in her wide eyes.

    Bette rubbed her young friend’s shoulders again, and sought to assure her with a smile. “You have so much to offer, Jade. Believe me. There is so much to you for someone to cherish. You are the brass ring for that one special person who you’re meant for … for that missing half who you may be wondering about. You feel that you’re walking around missing something, am I right? Is that something that’s been troubling you?”

    Jade nodded mutely, and bit on a trembling lip.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
