    “Yeah, of course Rian can join us,” Ali answered, and then gave Rian an uncertain smile, as if knowing that she had to get along with this woman, given that she was the girlfriend of her future brother-in-law. But there was something about her, and, more importantly, Jade’s ongoing reaction to her …

    An hour later, after they all had breakfast, Jade and Ali split off from the big group and headed to town while Max and Rian joined a bigger group of the groom’s college crew team. They’d all been in crew all throughout college in Stanford, and some had brought their wives and girlfriends to the wedding. They’d invited Max and Rian to go on a hike. Bette and Tina had gone off with William and a group of studio execs and their wives to drive to Yellowstone National Park.

    Jade and Ali were walking hand-in-hand up the broad staircase of the lodge, an hour after lunch, having just returned from town, when they heard Pauli, the bride-to-be and Ali’s sister, call out from the top of staircase, “Ali! Ali! You’re here at last, thank goodness! I just heard that it might rain tomorrow, and we need to quickly figure out how we’re going to realign the seats for the ceremony at least, because the lodge doesn’t have enough space in the tent they’re setting up, just in case, and …”

    Her panicked figure came into view, and was taking the steps down to meet them at too-quick a pace.

    In her haste, Pauli misjudged a step and then lurched forward dangerously. Her arms flailed around, trying to reach for a bannister but she was too far away from one. Jade sprang up the five steps that separated them and braced herself on a step so that she could absorb the impact Pauli would surely make when she crashed into Jade.

    Jade barely kept her balance when they collided, and she quickly wrapped her arms around Pauli’s waist and knelt on the step with one knee to keep them from tumbling down the staircase.

    “Pauli!”

    “Jade!”

    “Are you okay?”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
