    “I’m okay, I’m okay,” Pauli said, shakily. “I missed a step and was starting to fall,” she added. As she stood, she pulled up on Jade’s hand also. Her hands were shaking visibly.

    “Oh, Jade!” she exclaimed softly, “If you hadn’t been there! If you hadn’t run up the stairs to catch me ….”

    “Honey, you were amazing!” Ali cut in, and, despite agreeing with Jade that they wouldn’t be publicly affectionate with each other while on this trip, given Ali’s parents continuing sense of discomfort about their relationship, she pulled down on Jade’s neck and gave her a deep kiss.

    They heard some hooting around them, so Jade pulled away from the kiss quickly, her cheeks covered with a full-on blush, feeling embarrassed about being the center of attention.

    But Ali continued to stroke her face and arms, clear admiration and affection in her eyes, and Pauli was still thanking her over and over about having stopped her from tumbling down the stairs.

    After a few minutes, Pauli remembered why she’d rushed down the staircase. So she exclaimed again, her voice still shaking from what had happened, “Ali, you’ve got to help me!”

    “Calm down, Pauli. Calm down. We’ll figure this out, ok?” Ali responded, looking away from Jade.

    She flashed Pauli a hand sign to signal that she needed to talk to Jade first, and then pulled Jade away from the small crowd that had gather around them. They stepped to the other side of the broad staircase. “Honey, I know that I’d promised you that we’d be able to spend the day together, but …”

    “That’s ok, Ali…”

    “She has a wedding planner and everything, so I don’t know why she keeps asking me to..” Ali continued under her breath.

    “C’mon, Ali, don’t hiss,” Jade said with a smile. “She just feels better if you’re around while all of these things are being fixed, right? There are all these loose ends, it seems like. It’s a wedding after all.”

    “She’s going to owe me … us … big time, for this,” Ali answered, blowing a breath out.

    “Well, don’t you think that she did us a solid by insisting with your parents that I join this, in the first place?” Jade asked softly. “I mean, it was a bit of a battle for a while there, with your parents, right?”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
