    “You’re right, hun,” Ali answered and then sighed. “I hope you don’t feel that I’m neglecting you or anything?”

    Jade gave her a wicked smile, and then leaned over to whisper in her ear. “If you sneak into my room tonight, I can think of something we can do to make me feel less neglected.”

    Pauli called out to them, “C’mon Ali, you and Jade can continue all that later, alright? We need to take care of this thing!”

    Jade pushed Ali gently over to Pauli, and, as the sisters started walking up the broad staircase, and she was blowing Ali an air kiss, she heard Max’ voice from behind her, “Jade! Jade!” he called out from the bottom of the staircase.

    She turned around and summoned a smile. She raised her eyebrows in a questioning manner.

    “Do you want to join us on a boat trip and hike over on the other side of the lake?” he asked. Jade noted the guys standing around him were from the crew team of the groom. The smallest one, Carl, who’d sat next to Jade during breakfast, had explained that he’d been the coxswain “and I got to boss these hulks around, believe it or not. Needless to say, no one in campus messed with me because of these numskulls!” he’d said with a fond laugh as he elbowed the ribs of the nearest teammate. He explained now, “We overheard from the guides that there was an interesting trail that we want to explore. Interested?” He and Jade had gotten along during breakfast, and had exchanged stories about sports they were both into. He smiled now at Jade to try to convince her.

    “Didn’t you guys just return from a hike or something?” Jade asked, puzzled. She skipped down the rest of the steps, returning Carl’s friendly smile.

    Max shrugged, “It was just an hour-long hike, and we didn’t really go that far away. But we heard about this trail on the other side of the lake …”

    Rian stepped out from behind Max, surprising Jade, and cut in, “And I don’t want to be the only girl amongst a group of muscle-bound hulks going out there.”

    She flashed Jade a winning smile that Jade swore was designed to make her knees go weak. It was working.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
