    “All the other girls have gone into town to go shopping …” “But I’ll have to change, and if you guys are heading out already,” Jade started to protest. “Nonsense, what you have on is fine,” Carl answered, cajoling. “Sexy, even,” he added, and then smiled again, as if to counteract his flirting tone. “Come,

    “But I’ll have to change, and if you guys are heading out already,” Jade started to protest.

    “Nonsense, what you have on is fine,” Carl answered, cajoling. “Sexy, even,” he added, and then smiled again, as if to counteract his flirting tone.

    “Come, let’s go to your room, and you can go change, while the guys get everything else we need ready,” Rian added, and stepped around Max to pull gently on Jade’s elbow, guiding her out the revolving door of the lodge.

    “We won’t be long,” she called out over her shoulder as she continued to pull on Jade’s elbow. Her light touch on the elbow was a heat starter that Jade could feel with every other cell in her body.

    As they walked towards the row of cottages where Jade’s room was, Rian let go of the elbow but slipped her arm round Jade’s. She was teasing softly, “You seem to be playing the knight today. First, my scarf. Next, saving Pauli from falling down the stairs …” in a way that made the rest of the world melt away.

    Jade looked at her, and realized with a start that Rian was tall also, maybe just a couple of inches shorter than she was. Jade’s heart was pounding, and her breaths were shallow, and, as was normally the case when she was nervous, she walked faster than normal.

    She felt Rian entwine her fingers around hers and then stroke the arm she’d been holding on to with the other hand. “Umm…. could you please slow down? We’re not in that big of a hurry, you know?” she asked in a soft, sexy voice.

    Jade forced herself to slow down and took a deep breath. She admitted quietly, “I, um, walk fast when I’m nervous.” She bit her lip and stole a quick glance at Rian, who was grinning at her.

    “Why are you nervous?” Rian asked, licking her lips as she looked at Jade. And on top of everything else, she’s got these naturally red, kissable lips, nice and soft-looking, thinner upper lip, and fuller lower lip.

    Before she could stop herself, Jade answered, below her breath, so softly that Rian barely caught it, “Because you’re so beautiful.”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
