Chapter I – Yes, I’m Ready
Rian’s breath caught.
They stopped walking and faced each other. Rian tentatively reached out, swept away bangs that fallen across Jade’s face, then tenderly brushed the back of her fingers across a cheek. She asked softly, “You really think so?”
Rian caught the hand that was brushing across her face and tried to swallow. She nodded nervously.
“Sweet, Jade. You’ll be a heart-breaker for sure when you grow up,” Rian said with a tentative smile.
When I grow up?
“Look, I’ll wait out here, while you go in and change, if you really need to. Maybe just your shoes, maybe?” Rian was saying. Jade’s head was still spinning.
Rian spun her around, took the key from her limp hand, and gently pushed her into the room after unlocking the door and opening it.
Jade stumbled into the room, took a deep breath, and automatically went to the row of shoes that she’d unpacked from her luggage and had laid out in the closet. With unseeing hands, she pulled on the trail shoes she’d used earlier that day, when she’d gone out for a morning run.
“Can I explain what I meant?” Rian asked her as soon as she stepped out of the room.
Jade brushed away the brunette’s hands that were lightly grasping her arm, and answered brusquely, “I may be young, but I’m not stupid, Rian. No need to explain the birds and the bees here.”
She walked quickly down the outdoor path that led to the main lodge, not bothering to look back and check where Rian was.
“Jade, please,” Rian called out as she ran to catch up. “Let me explain …”
Jade suddenly stopped and wheeled around. Rian almost ran into her.
“I don’t need you to connect the dots for me, Rian. I’m young, as you said … maybe too young? But I can figure things out. Plus, you have Max. And you’re straight …”
“No, it’s not that …” Rian tried to interrupt her, but the flashing green eyes weren’t accommodating.
“And I have Ali,” Jade added in clipped tones. “Unlike you, she doesn’t need to explain things to me. I’m younger than her, but I know that I make her happy. I really don’t care if you think I need growing up to do, yet. I know she’s satisfied with what I can do for her even now … so … ”

Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .
As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
