    She turned again and headed for the revolving doors of the main lodge that led to the lower lobby. She went through the doors and was soon greeted by shouts from Carl and Max, who waved her over. They explained that it turned out the guides hadn’t really done the hike on the trail in

    She went through the doors and was soon greeted by shouts from Carl and Max, who waved her over. They explained that it turned out the guides hadn’t really done the hike on the trail in the other side of the lake, yet. “It’s up to you, Jade, if you still want to come,” Max added, with a small smile. “I’m not sure if Rian would want to, either, if the guides don’t have any experience on that trail … where is Rian, by the way? Did she go to our room?”

    Jade turned around, about to say that Rian would have been right behind her, but she saw that they were right. Rian had disappeared.

    “Umm… she could have,” Jade answered and shrugged. Who cares anyway? Girl thinks I’m a damn kid.

    “Anyway, I’m still interested in joining the hike, if you guys decide to go,” she added, feeling juiced by her ongoing irritation and slow-burning sense of hurt about what Rian had said. She wanted to burn the feeling off with a good hike.

    “Let me call the room. I’m not getting a good cell signal here,” Max answered, as he pursed his lips.

    Carl told Jade as Max turned to head to the concierge’s desk, “the other guys went to get bear spray, and said they’ll meet us by the golf cart area. The guides said they could take us in one of the bigger transports they use for moving equipment around.  We’ll drive about two miles from here – that would reduce the amount of walking we’d have to do to get to the lake. Then we’ll take a boat across the lake, and start the hike from the trailhead in that side of the lake.”

    Max was just getting to the concierge’ desk when Rian pushed through the revolving doors. Jade could hear Max asking worriedly, “What’s the matter, honey? Why are you crying?”

    He was hugging Rian against his body when they both joined Jade and Carl. Rian was saying, still wiping off tears from her eyes, “It’s nothing, Max. I was just talking to someone, and we had a misunderstanding, but there’s nothing I can do about it now, so…”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
