    Max misunderstood her and asked with clear surprise, “You got a good cell signal from here?” Rian dropped her mouth. Jade suppressed a smile, and looked down at her trail shoes. “Well … anyway, you can call your friend again and clear things up when you get back to DC, right?” Max asked, and then

    Max misunderstood her and asked with clear surprise, “You got a good cell signal from here?”

    Rian dropped her mouth.

    Jade suppressed a smile, and looked down at her trail shoes.

    “Well … anyway, you can call your friend again and clear things up when you get back to DC, right?” Max asked, and then dropped a kiss on Rian’s hair.

    Rian was shaking her head slightly but took Max’s hand and entwined her fingers with his.

    “C’mon sweetie, the guys are waiting for us,” Max said as he smiled down at Rian, and then pulled her along. With his free hand he signaled for Carl and Jade to follow them.

    Half an hour later they were skimming over the lake, and Jade could see that Rian remained starboard, and was avoiding looking at her. Max had left her where she sat when he said he had to consult with the guides about where they would anchor the boat in, and so it was just Jade and Rian by the bow of the boat. Jade moved to a portside space, keeping away from Rian’s area.  Suits me just fine.

    One of the guides steered the boat to the closest area to the shore they could drop anchor in, explaining that they’d stopped in this area for other activities in the past, including for guests who wanted to swim in this part of the lake. It was less than twenty five feet to the shore, so they could easily kayak over.

    Jade joined Carl and one other guy on one of the kayaks while Rian and Max and one of the guides took another kayak. The rest of the guys took two other kayaks.

    The sun was bearing down on the group and Jade was thinking about how inviting the lake looked.

    Turned out Rian was thinking of the same thing.

    Jade was greeted by Max when the kayak she’d been in hit the shore, “So … Jade, do you really want to go on the hike?”

    Jade gave him a rueful smile, “Actually, I’m thinking that I’d like to swim in this lake. The sun’s really hot, and I’m not sure I want to go on a hot hike that could go on and on since the guides don’t know much about it …”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
