    Max chuckled. “Well, I’m actually glad you said that because Rian doesn’t want to go on a potentially long hot hike either, and wants to swim, too. So do you mind staying back with her?” Jade shot a look at Rian, who looked away. “Umm…” Jade started. One of the guides said, “I also brought

    Max chuckled. “Well, I’m actually glad you said that because Rian doesn’t want to go on a potentially long hot hike either, and wants to swim, too. So do you mind staying back with her?”

    Jade shot a look at Rian, who looked away.

    “Umm…” Jade started.

    One of the guides said, “I also brought a fishing pole, in case you want to fish. We’ll leave some bear spray, too, just in case.”

    He paused, “By the way, do you swim?”

    Jade nodded, “Competitively when I was a kid. I still swim regularly.”

    Max’s smile widened, “Great! Makes me feel better already.”

    “So let’s get this show on the road, shall we? I’m getting hot just standing around here,” Carl called out from a spot closer to the trailhead. Like the ol’ coxswain he’d been, he managed to corral the rest of the guys, and got one of the guides to start leading them out of the shore and down the trail.

    A minute later, it was just Jade and Rian left in the beach.

    Jade looked on perplexedly as Rian circled the area, checking around, and when she was satisfied about something, she lay her bag on one of the flat rocks by the shore, took her shoes off, and began to pull her Capri-length ath-leisure pants off. As she was tugging her shirt up, Jade asked, fairly shouting, “What do you think you’re doing?!”

    In a voice muffled behind the shirt, Rian answered, “Getting ready to swim, what else?”

    When she stood in front of Jade in just her thong and sport bra, with an unreadable face, she asked, “Are you going to swim in your clothes?”

    For the second time since they got to that shore Jade didn’t know what to say. “Umm…”

    “Well, I’m taking everything off,” Rian announced, as she pulled her sport bra off. “It’s just us here, anyway.”

    As she pulled down her thong, she added, “And as you said, you’ve got Ali, and are happy with her. So there’s nothing here that you’d be interested in, right?”

    With that, she stepped out of her thong, and dropped all her clothes on the flat stone, walking gracefully on the balls of her feet, unhurried, and without a backward glance, slowly entered the water.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
