    “Before Max, I had a girlfriend. We were together for a year. It was intense. And in college, I had a girlfriend also. We roomed together for two years, but split up after graduating. So yeah … not straight. You just assumed I was.”

    “Wha-a-a-t?!” was the only response Jade could manage.

    “That’s all you have to say?” Rian asked teasingly.

    Jade was trying to form words but was not succeeding.

    Rian chuckled, backed away, and then splashed some water again at Jade’s stunned face.

    “C’mon, let’s swim a little. I’m beginning to get cold,” she said with another light laugh. And then she turned and started a steady crawl towards the boat, maintaining a stead 8-beat kick, breathing every third stroke. Jade caught up easily with her, and together they swam in rhythm away from the boat, parallel to the shore.

    When Rian felt her arms grow tired and her lungs begin to burn, she did a flip under water and started to swim back to the boat. She sensed Jade catch up to her again, and, with steady strokes they swam to the boat, and then turned simultaneously towards the shore when they neared the boat. When they were about ten feet from the shore, Rian stopped swimming, and started to blow bubbles under water, so that she could regain her breath.

    Jade stopped also, but since she wasn’t as tired out she simply threaded the water beside Rian, and watched her quietly. When she saw that Rian was alright, she turned up to face the sky and lay back on the water, floating like Rian had been earlier.

    After a few minutes she broke their shared silence, and said, “I’m sorry I snapped at you earlier.”

    When she didn’t hear any response, she added, “And I didn’t mean to make you cry.”

    “There’s a reason why I said what I said,” Rian finally answered. “But I should have phrased it another way.”

    Jade “sat up,” started threading water, and faced Rian. “Will you accept my apology?”

    Rian stayed on her back, facing the sky. Jade moved closer to her while continuing to thread water until the top of Rian’s head bumped gently against her chest. She curled her arms under Rian’s shoulders that were under water, and held her up lightly under both arms so that Rian could float more easily.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
