Chapter I – Yes, I’m Ready
Rian gave her a sad smile. “That’s what I’m trying to say, baby. You will find someone. More than once. You’ll probably go through several “someone’s,” experience several “somethings,” the way I have. And I know that keeping my distance from you now is a risk. A big one. But I don’t want to stand in the way of your growth, sweet Jade.”
Tears began to stream down Jade’s cheeks.
Rian move closer and gently wiped away those tears with her thumbs. “You’ll grow into someone truly amazing, Jade. And I’m gambling that you’ll remember me when you do. And then maybe … we will have something, then. That’s my hope.”
Jade squeezed her eyes shut. She was feeling even more confused and hurt now. And then she opened her eyes in panic. “But how will I know where to find you? How long is this learning curve … bullshit … going to take?”
Rian gave her a small smile, and injected as much brightness into her voice as she could manage, “We’ll find each other, for sure. For now, think of me as a … camp counselor or something. Or else someone you’re interested in. But … this is important … someone who believes in you. There was someone I’d admired years ago while in high school, and who said she believed I could be anyone I wanted, and do anything I’d set my mind to doing. Did wonders for my confidence.”
They fell quiet, and stared at each other as they continued to thread water.
Jade could see that this was hard for Rian, too. So she said with a pretend groan, “Don’t say camp counselor please! I had a super sexy camp counselor once and I had wet dreams about her all summer long, and well into ninth grade!”
Rian playfully splashed water on her face again. “Are you telling me that you’ll have wet dreams about me also?” she asked teasingly.
“Of course I will! Swimming beside you, naked, on this lake? Are you kidding me?!” Jade exclaimed, and then splashed Rian back. She let Rian wipe the water off of her face, and asked quietly, “Are you serious about waiting? A ten like you? Or not a ten … a thousand times ten.”

Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .
As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
