    “You don’t need to apologize, Jade. What I said hurt you, and you let me know that, so maybe this is the clean start we need for a …” Rian paused, her eyes searching above her head for Jade’s eyes. She smiled when they came into view. “For what?” “Friendship,” Rian said and then smiled

    “You don’t need to apologize, Jade. What I said hurt you, and you let me know that, so maybe this is the clean start we need for a …” Rian paused, her eyes searching above her head for Jade’s eyes. She smiled when they came into view.

    “For what?”

    “Friendship,” Rian said and then smiled when she saw Jade’s eyes cloud over in disappointment.

    “Friends? That’s all you want for us? To be friends?” Jade asked, sputtering again.

    Rian “sat up”, turned under water, using her legs to start threading also, and like earlier, snaked her arms around Jade’s neck.

    “Jade … this was what I meant earlier,” she started. “You’ve got so much to experience; there’s so much lying ahead that’s in store for you. And I guess, in a way, I’m being selfish….”

    Jade’s arms circled Rian as before, but she drew the brunette closer than she dared to earlier. Even with the coolness of the lake water, she could feel heat building between them.

    “How so?” she asked.

    “I’ve experienced bad relationships as well as good ones, Jade, and I have a sense now of how good ones start. Let’s just say that I’m being selfish with you, I admit, because if or when we have one … it has to be after you’ve gone through the learning curve, so to speak, when it comes to grown-up relationships. I don’t want ours to be the relationship you learn from. You’ll have others for that. They’ll be lining up, I assure you.”

    Jade pulled her even closer, and felt a charge run through her when she felt Rian’s breasts rub gently against hers. “What?” she asked hoarsely. “Is that some kind of reverse psychology or something? That doesn’t make any sense at all.”

    Rian backed away slowly and released her arms from around Jade’s neck. They stared at each other again. She said slowly, “I want ours to be the relationship you end up in.”

    “And what if I find someone else before that happens, huh?” Jade asked stubbornly, as tears began to form in the backs of her eyes, the sting of Rian’s rejection sinking deep into her heart.  “Just tell it to me straight. Do you want something to happen between us or don’t you?”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
