    Bette and Tina exchanged a knowing look, and Bette prompted Jade to tell them about it. “Anything happen in particular?” Jade stopped walking, rubbed her thumb across her chin thoughtfully, and answered slowly, “Well … this all started with our talk actually. When you advised me to be patient, and to believe in myself, essentially…”

    Bette and Tina exchanged a knowing look, and Bette prompted Jade to tell them about it. “Anything happen in particular?”

    Jade stopped walking, rubbed her thumb across her chin thoughtfully, and answered slowly, “Well … this all started with our talk actually. When you advised me to be patient, and to believe in myself, essentially…”

    Tina looked at Bette and squeezed her partner’s hand. Bette was nodding at Jade to signal they were listening.

    “I spent time with Ali at first, and then a group of people this afternoon, swam in the lake … and, well, suddenly, things just clicked into place,” Jade continued. “Things started to make sense; what you said made perfect sense. What all those poems and love songs talk about made sense. And I do think I will find that someone who will be what you are to each other. I just need some growing up to do, and then I’ll be ready for her … that ever happen to you?”

    Bette smiled at her with something akin to pride; even if they’d only just met this young woman, she felt a connection with her. The fact that she was Tina’s cousin had something to do with this feeling, probably.

    She nodded her slowly in response. “Yes, those moments of clarity have happened to me.” She looked at Tina and smiled, feeling a remembered sense of what it felt like when she’d decided to propose to her blonde partner during the Valentine’s Day party they’d hosted in their newly remodeled home a few months ago. “They’re windows into our own souls, I think, where your own inner wisdom reveals itself to you.”

    Tina smiled back at Bette, blinking back tears. She’d felt the same magical moment open for her, too, but it had been earlier that week, when she’d been massaging Bette’s feet, after the brunette returned to their rented apartment tired out after having spent much of the day on her feet while overseeing the installation of custom-light features in their new home.

    Bette turned to look at Jade again, shook her head slightly as she smiled, and then reached out to rub Jade’s arm lightly. “From here it feels like you’ve realized that you’ve found her already. Have you?” she asked presciently.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
