    Jade scanned the room and saw Rian laughing with a group of the wives and girlfriends of members of the groom’s crew team while they’d all been at Stanford.  They were all by the table set up in a corner of the room. A few appetizers as well as the punch bowl had been set up in

    Jade scanned the room and saw Rian laughing with a group of the wives and girlfriends of members of the groom’s crew team while they’d all been at Stanford.  They were all by the table set up in a corner of the room. A few appetizers as well as the punch bowl had been set up in that table. She realized that she and Rian hadn’t spoken since they’d returned from the lake. They hadn’t been avoiding each other, but things just happened that way, especially during the party. Ali had been monopolizing Jade, holding her hand when they were standing, sitting on her lap when they were sitting, and Rian had been swept up by the group she was with now.

    Jade stood up, intending to make her way to the group. Bette intercepted her halfway there, carrying a pair of refreshed champagne flutes with her. “Careful, Jade,” the brunette said softly, and followed that up with a smile.

    Jade grinned back and nodded. “Don’t worry. We’ve reached an understanding.”

    Bette shrugged and said, “The best-laid plans of mice and men …”

    Jade shook her head, still smiling, “I know that saying. Not in this case.”

    When she got to Rian’s group, Rian’s back was to her, but the woman standing next to her exclaimed quietly, “Oh my, looks like the studliest girl in the room tonight’s decided to grace us with her presence.”

    Rian turned and smiled when she saw Jade. She drew her arm out, as if to welcome Jade to her side. She linked her arm around Jade’s, as a friend would, and said loudly “Everyone, this is Jade, girlfriend of Ali, Pauli’s sister.”

    “Sexy girlfriend, you mean,” someone said, winking at Jade.

    Normally, Jade would have shrunk in embarrassment at that, but, with Rian’s arm linked around hers, and standing so close to her, the comment just bounced off. Jade smiled at the woman and returned her wink with a devastating one of her own.

    “Are you the one who went with the guys and Rian on that expedition to the “jungle” this afternoon?” someone else asked. “Here, have a drink with us,” she added as she handed a cup of the mix in the punch bowl to Jade.

    Jade nodded and thanked her for the drink. “But I didn’t go on the hike. Good thing, too. The guys would not stop moaning and groaning all the way back about having gotten lost repeatedly,” Jade said, and smiled at Rian when she felt a squeeze on her arm.   You smell so sexy, Rian mouthed to her.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
