    Jade grinned back, “I may have. I have miles to go before I sleep, as the poem goes, but … I may have.” Tina stepped closer and suddenly gave her a quick peck on the cheek, and then rubbed off the lipstick mark she’d left, murmuring, “Dearest Jade, we’re so happy for you.” Tina paused

    Tina paused as Jade teared-up slightly.

    “But in case you feel like you’re losing your way while on this journey to get ready for her, don’t hesitate to call us, alright? For anything …”

    Jade pulled her into a quick, tight embrace, murmuring back, “I will. I’m so glad we connected, Tina. I hope you and Bette never forget me.”

    Tina stepped back after Jade released her, and took her hand, “You’ll always be welcome in our home, Jade.”

    She exchanged a look with Bette, and then led their little group, hand-in-hand down the path towards the lodge.

    The bachelorette party was entering its third hour and the bachelorette and many in the party were well-inebriated. Ali was perched on Jade’s lap, laughing hysterically at something that one of Pauli’s friends said.

    Pauli walked unsteadily to Ali, holding her phone in front of her, and asking loudly, “Ali, honey, would you please talk to Natasha?  She’s saying something about the wedding singer, and the songs, and … I don’t know. Please?”

    Ali shook her head as Pauli collapsed on the sofa, and rested her head on Jade’s shoulder. She was saying, well within earshot of Ali, slightly slurring her words, “Jade, if Ali hasn’t told you, yet, let me tell you that you look so fucking sexy tonight. And you smell amazing. I have no idea why my parents think the way they do … or still do, to some extent …but less so now… anyway, I totally get it. Hell, I’d do you in a heartbeat, if I didn’t love Ali, and …”

    Ali stood and pulled Pauli off of the couch with an exasperated groan. “Pauli stop hitting on my girlfriend, would you?”

    “C’mon, she says the wedding singer can join us here and test out a few songs,” Ali continued. “Let’s go talk to them. They’re in the lobby, waiting.”

    Pauli and Ali made their way out of the party room, telling everyone that they’d return shortly.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
