    “Oh!” Another in the group exclaimed. “So you joined Rian in that swim in the lake, then?” Jade nodded and drank casually from the cup. Good thing I stuck with beer tonight. This drink is potent! “She says that area’s really nice to swim in. Peaceful, quiet,” the woman said. Jade nodded and exchanged a

    “Oh!” Another in the group exclaimed. “So you joined Rian in that swim in the lake, then?”

    Jade nodded and drank casually from the cup. Good thing I stuck with beer tonight. This drink is potent!

    “She says that area’s really nice to swim in. Peaceful, quiet,” the woman said.

    Jade nodded and exchanged a look with Rian before turning to look around the group, and saying “You all should go. Highly recommend it.”

    Before they could continue, they heard Natasha get on a microphone to call everyone’s attention, “Ladies, ladies. It sounds like everyone’s having a good time tonight! We need your help: can you all listen to a few of the songs we’re thinking of adding to the song list for the wedding reception, and then tell us what you think?”

    A chorus of claps and whistles answered her. So Natasha turned around and waved her arm towards a smallish woman who had a guitar slung around her body, “Everyone, please welcome Teri, she’s one of the lead singers of the act we’ve booked for the reception.”

    Teri was welcomed with claps and cheers. Bette and Tina and the group of women they’d been talking to, who were mostly wives of men from the studio, wandered closer to where everybody had gathered. Ali waved them over to sit next to her on the couch. She intended to ask them whether they’d seen Jade, since her view of various parts of the room had been obstructed by the women who’d started to crowd around the impromptu stage area.

    “Thanks, ladies. Ok, most of the songs I’m about to sing were requested by the parents of the bride and groom, actually, but we’ve rearranged them slightly to make them sound more like today’s songs, so that we don’t totally alienate the audience…” Teri explained drily as she strummed and tuned the guitar.

    Shouts of thanks and laughter greeted her comments.

    As Teri continued to banter with the audience, Bette leaned over Tina to ask Ali, “So what do Teri and the band normally sing?”

    Natasha, who’d sat next to Ali in the couch, leaned over Ali to answer, “They’re actually quite good at covering KC songs. But they can cover other bands also. They do the songs that are popular at weddings really well.”

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
