Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

“Let me play the devil’s advocate, though, and argue the position of making sure we take all the careful steps we’ve been taking when we’d surfaced the gold, Bette,” Richard responded.  “No shortcuts.  Make sure all the angles are covered.  That’s what you asked of me when you asked me to help you.”

    He was right, of course.

“When do you think our next window will be, then?” Bette asked reluctantly.

“I don’t know, yet,” Richard answered slowly.  “The independent firms we’ve hired to monitor the precious metals market have given us conflicting analysis.  But once we get a few more important market numbers next week, and some of the geo-political uncertainties settle a bit, we could have a better idea.  Let’s reassess after we sell the last batch later this week, shall we?”

Bette glanced at the summaries of the reports Richard had referred to and sighed again.  “Unfortunately, I have to agree, Richard.”

“I could informally ask around, see what people are thinking?” he asked.

Bette shook her head.  “No … no.  Let’s keep all of this between us, as we’d discussed.”

He nodded, and reminded her gently, “You know I haven’t breathed a word of this even to Robert, right?  And he’s my oldest friends here.  The one I would trust the most.”

“I know,” she answered.  “Thanks so much for everything, Richard.  And you’re right, let’s reassess at the end of next week, and focus on what we need to do to complete the sale of this last batch from Hawaii.”

As she flicked her finger up and down the screen of her tablet, he asked, “So what else is bothering you, Bette?”

She sighed again, and then gave him a half-frown, half-smile.  “There’s something I have to do, and I’m not looking forward to it.”

“Tina okay?  Is it about her?” Richard asked, in a concerned voice.

“She’s okay.  Thanks for asking, Richard.  No, this has to do with Peter, and all of that,” Bette answered.

“Oh … is it about that assassin, that lady who orchestrated the attack on his estate, that killed Peter and wounded Diane and Brom?  Didn’t she end up being killed in that storm, with Andrew Green?” Richard asked.

    Bette grimaced but didn’t respond.

Richard saw through the video feed Bette’s discomfort and clear reluctance to delve further into what was bothering her.

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
