Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

She renewed clawing on the floor, with desperate thrusts, reaching out to the gun that now just rested at her fingertips.

Just as she got to the gun, she heard his triumphant cry, “Know this Ms. Miller.  I won’t stop until I get what I want.  Now — because you tried to stop me, I swear I’ll not only kill you, I’ll get anyone who I find you’ve cared about.”

In a flash she thought about Callie, and Callie’s two children, Christopher and Kim, who they’d raised together.  Callie was gone.  But the kids?  They had their whole lives ahead of them, still.

As she twisted around, clutching the gun in her good hand, other thoughts quickly flashed.

    Bette.  Angie. The unborn baby.

    And Tina.

    They all had to live.

“This is justified,” she thought as she squeezed the trigger.  “This time, shooting him … saving them … is virtuous.”

Miller and Andrew Green fired at each other simultaneously.

    A month later

“A lot has changed in a very short time, Bette,” Richard Yu commented as he and Bette reviewed the status of their efforts to monetize the gold bars that she’d retrieved from the sea bed in Hawaii.  They’d been doing so in stages, endeavoring to time the sales of the gold bars in the gold exchange carefully to avoid causing sudden dips and dives in the market price of gold while managing to keep the unsold bars secure.  They were almost done with the cache of gold Bette had retrieved in Hawaii.

“I think I can continue to help you surface the gold through the Shanghai gold exchange, but I don’t want to attract unwanted interest in you and your activities, so that’s why I recommend you space out your retrieval of other gold that you say you may have access to.  Let’s wait a bit after we’re done with everything you’ve brought out of Hawaii.”

Over the video feed of their call he saw Bette rub her eyebrows and then lightly massage her temple, and then heard her sigh.

“You understand, Richard, that while we don’t want things to surface too soon … I don’t want to run out of time and expose us to danger by moving things too late, either,” she said worriedly.

      ALL STARS.

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
