Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
“Um … just let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help you, ok?” he said as Bette continued to remain pensive.
Five minutes later, they ended their video call.
Bette stood and picked up her things, dropping them one by one into her croc-skin messenger bag, lost in thought.
Half an hour later, she boarded the chauffeured car that the few members of the foundation’s board that she’d recruited had insisted she get to drive her around in safety. She’d been reluctant, but had to admit having a car service like this had been convenient. And Brom had overseen the installation of security features into it, so she felt safe in it. She rang Tina up.
“Hi T,” she greeted the blonde, who’d picked up the call almost immediately.
“Hi baby. Everything ok? How’d things go with Richard?” Tina asked.
“Well, things could be better. He recommends we assess things after we complete the sale of the last batch from Hawaii. This means I may have to push things back in the schedule I’d planned to retrieve the gold that Philip and Jancis stashed in the salt mines in the border between Austria and Germany, T,” Bette answered slowly, still reflecting on her conversation with Richard.
“So you’re worried about the possibility that other people who could be hunting for that gold could get closer in the meantime?” Tina asked.
Bette sighed again, just as she’d done while talking to Richard. “Yes, I am. I mean … yes, while all of that supposed evidence that linked the members of the core leadership of the gold collective to Cam and this spurious plot that they were all supposed to have planned and carried out against Peter effectively muzzled them, we don’t really know whether it was just them hunting for this gold cache that the custodians have been hiding, right?”
This time it was Tina who sighed. “Baby, how about I join you for the thing tonight? Maybe we could talk about what’s worrying you while we wait? You seem off and maybe it might help if the two of us try to figure things out … together?”
“I would love to talk about what’s going on, T. But are you sure you can handle being out of bed after just getting through a full day of work? Aren’t you supposed to start slowing down, rest up, since you’re still nauseous, T?” Bette answered worriedly. “And what about Angie?”

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
