Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
She’d heard the gun clatter to the floor as they both fell. She crawled desperately towards the area she calculated the gun had fallen to, not knowing how badly Mr. Green had been hurt, but figuring out that he could still have the strength to harm her if he got to the gun first.
True enough, she saw that he had partially sat up, the knife sticking out of his chest, blood pouring out of him. The gun was by his feet. F&*^%#! I’m dead if he gets to that gun!
Just as he slowly reached for it, the boat hit a wave hard and caused it to lurch violently to one side.
He was knocked back and the gun clattered away from him, bounced a few feet further away, nearly sliding under the sofa.
They were now almost equidistant to the gun.
Miller was dizzy from the loss of blood and pain caused by the gunshot that tore through her stomach area. She fought to ignore the pain, clutching at the wound with one hand, as she crawled to the new location the gun had slid to.
Mr. Green howled in pain as he tried to stand after being knocked back. Crawling to the gun was out of the question, since the knife was stuck on his chest.
The knife!
With his good hand, he struggled to pull the knife out of his chest as he saw Miller inch closer to the gun.
With a final pull and maniacal cry of pain, he pulled the knife out. Miller was now about to reach the gun.
With a howl he heaved the knife at her, aiming for her head. Instinctively, Miller protected her head area, partially raising her left arm. The knife just missed her forearm but struck her shoulder.
With inner glee Andrew Green heard an answering cry of pain from her.
The knife had cut through muscle, which had slowed it down, but the tip of the knife had sunk into a cluster of nerves. Miller screamed out in pain so intense it blinded her. She squeezed her eyes shut. Swallow the pain, dammit!
Miller willed herself to open her eyes to locate the gun, and Mr. Green, at the same time. Improbably, Mr. Green had crawled to a hidden drawer a couple of feet behind him, and looked like he was pulling something out. Another gun?

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
