Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

Now both of them were smiling at him, and Christopher found his breath growing shallower.   Is someone trying to punk me, getting these two beautiful women to sit here beside me, smiling my way, as if wanting to get to know me?  The brunette was dead-on about mom and Georgie, though, and not many people know that about me.  Who are they?  What’s going on?

“Ermm…. ahhh….are you two trying to punk me or something?  Did my friends put you up to this?” he asked with a nervous laugh.

As Bette opened her mouth to answer him, he looked quickly around and followed-up his questions, “Are they observing us right now?  I know my birthday is coming up soon … so is this part of the surprise that they said they were going to spring on me?”

Bette scooted closer to him and reached out to briefly rub his forearm, and said in a reassuring and warm voice, “No, Christopher.  Your friends didn’t put us up to this.  We knew one of your moms, though, and I’ve been trying to find you ever since the … um… accident in Hawaii.”

He instinctively retreated away from her at the mention of Hawaii.  A nervous look came over him, and Bette saw a sense of hyper-alertness set in in his body-language.

As she opened her mouth to try again, he blurted out, as his eyes narrowed, “Wait… wait!  A-a-are you, um … Bette?   Bette Porter-Kennard?”

Bette reached out again, but he pulled back, and retreated even further to the edge of the bench.  He burst out with, “I swear, lady.  I swear to you I did not know about any of the stuff that Georgie did!  And I’m really, really sorry about what happened to your friend Peter, and to your other friends. I…”

Before he could say anything more, Bette reached out and firmly took both of his hands between her own and said in a steady, calm voice as she talked over his sputtering, “Christopher!  Christopher, settle down.  I know … I know that you didn’t know anything.  I’m not here to grill you about that.  We just want to talk to you, and lay out a different story about Georgie from the one investigators have told you;  it’s different from what you, they, and the whole world think they know about her.  Alright?  Will you let us do that?”

      ALL STARS.

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
