Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

She kept a firm grip of his hands and willed him with her eyes to look at her.

Christopher swallowed nervously and found he couldn’t look away from the large brown eyes that were looking insistently into his.  He read a warmth, concern, and sincerity in them.  She continued to talk in that calm, steady, soothing voice, and held his suddenly clammy hands between her soft and warm hands.  His breathing steadied and, after a beat, he nodded his head, and blew a breath out.

He heard her ask about the train he was planning to board.  “Um … I was planning to take the one to White Plains that leaves in an hour,” he responded.

Bette could see he was beginning to calm down as she continued to talk to him, “… ok, I can arrange for my car to take you to White Plains later, if you’d like.  I expect you may have a lot of questions after you’ve heard what we have to say, and this’ll all probably take longer than a hour.  Why don’t we go to one of the restaurants here, and find a quieter spot where we can talk?  What do you say?”

Christopher nodded.   “Let me call my friend, and tell him I’ll be late.”

Both Bette and Tina nodded in response and gave him warm smiles again.

After he finished his call they all stood up.  Bette asked, “Hope you like seafood?”

He chuckled.  “If you managed to track me down here, I expect that your research would have told you that, yes, I like seafood.”

Bette grinned back.  “Great!  We have reservations in one of the best seafood restaurants in the city.  And it’s right here in the station!”

Half and hour later, as they were finishing up on the platter of oysters that served as their appetizer, Christopher observed, “You went to a lot of trouble to do all this, Bette.  I gotta say that this isn’t the normal reaction of someone that the investigators said was one of the targets of an assassin.  Reaching out to that assassin’s family, the way you’re doing, that is …”

Tina laid down her soup spoon, and this time, she responded on their behalf as she cut in, “Why don’t we start from the beginning, Christopher?  Because I knew Georgina before she even met your mom and you and Kim.  And the Georgina I knew, and I’m sure that you knew … and loved … is not the Georgina the investigators and all of the so-called evidence that seems to have materialized out of the blue, make her out to be, right?”

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
