Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
Christopher coughed slightly and surreptitiously wiped a tear that fell on his cheek. He let Tina squeeze his hand reassuringly as he drank from his water glass.
He cleared his throat, and gave her a quick smile. “Okay, Tina. Let’s start from the beginning. I’m guessing you met her in London?”
“Yeah, it was over fifteen years ago,” Tina sat back, released her friendly grip on his hand, and returned his smile. “I was in the middle of my uni-years, and Georgina kindly took me in to share a flat with her….”
An hour later, as they were finishing their desserts and drinking coffee (tea for Tina), Bette concluded, “I didn’t hear from her after that call. Like I said, I’d been surprised that she’d followed me to Hawaii, and, although she said it had been her idea, I later found out that she and my lawyer had both come up with that plan. She said she was concerned about me, and that she felt someone had to watch my back. Later on, after my friends and I did our own investigation into what could have happened that day, we figured out that she’d found out something about Andrew Green, and what he was up to…”
Christopher interrupted her, holding up his hand, “Wait a second … are you saying that Andrew Green is somehow not a victim in all of this? That he was, instead, implicated in this whole plot that resulted in Peter’s death, and the attack on you and Tina and your friends in that estate?”
Bette and Tina looked at each other and then back at Christopher. Bette licked her lips, thinking about how to clear this part of the story up, without revealing things that she couldn’t tell Christopher, things that she knew Cam Miller herself hadn’t been told about.
While preparing for this meeting with Christopher, over the previous nights, she’d reviewed all the various files and reports Brom and Dave had pulled together about what could have happened. Through contacts, Dave had discovered that it had been Andrew Green’s men who’d been inquiring about Bette, trying to find out where she was staying in Hawaii. And he’d also interviewed a bellhop in the hotel Cam had been staying in, who said that he’d seen Cam being forced, it looked like, into a dark-colored Bentley, that Dave ultimately traced to Andrew Green.

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
