Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
He ignored her questioning look.
“Terminal, we are 10 minutes out. Over.”
“10 minutes. Roger that, Lightning.”
Why did Andrew Green arrange this? Was he planning to have her killed? Just like he did to Peter, maybe?
As she mulled over what to do, Miller asked him in a toneless voice as he turned to face her, “Did you have Peter killed?”
He ignored her question, and asked her as he flipped the captain’s chair around and rested his forearms casually over the top of its back, “I can understand why you asked that, based on the story I just told you. Do you believe killing someone can ever be justified?”
“Did you?” Miller asked, insistent, as she clenched and unclenched her fists unconsciously. “Have Peter killed?”
“Let me put my question in another way: can something which is not virtuous ever truly be justified?” he countered. “What Peter’s grandfather did to my father could not have been virtuous, even if legal — it was unjustified, an act of unbridled greed. I’m just trying to balance the ledger to the original agreement that they’d entered into.”
“I think you had Peter killed. Probably over those mining rights. You’re a monster,” Miller said quietly.
“Now, who’s the monster here?” he asked, laughing mirthlessly. “I’m not the one the law would call a killer. Maybe you could tell me what it feels like to pull a trigger?”
“I never said I was a virtuous person,” Miller parried.
“Neither did I,” Andrew Green responded, smiling cruelly.
“Do you want to do the same thing to Bette Porter-Kennard? Is that why you want me to research her?” Miller asked, after a moment’s pause.
“Now why would I want to do that?” he asked, evincing real puzzlement at her question.
Miller remained silent, shifting her weight from one leg to the other, mind whirring.
“No … what I’d like to do with regard to Bette, is to collect information. Like I’d asked you to. And maybe, “collect” her, so to speak, become her friend, and see what she knows about those liens and mining rights that Peter’s family owns. Did Peter arrange for those liens and rights to be passed on to someone before he died? My information is that he’d arranged for everything else pretty efficiently. Through his foundation or something. But fate of those rights apparently remain a mystery. Are they just lying out there, ready for the taking? Would Bette know?”

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
