Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

“Later, I tried to contest these, citing the partnership agreements that he and my father had forged, and which I thought were supposed to supercede any sub-agreements that they’d reached on any one particular mine.”

“But Peter’s father was intent on protecting those liens and mining rights, even though he never ended up getting mining operations started in those mines. I was quite young at the time I started this court battle, first with Peter’s grandfather, and then his father after.  In the end, it turned out to be a costly and bitter one. Peter’s father succeeded in denying me what I thought were my father’s rights to those liens. He’d hired the best lawyers and they beat our team soundly in the courts.”

He fell silent as he leaned over one of the railings to gaze out at the sea. Miller took a seat in one of the lounging chairs behind him. She asked, “So what happened? Did those liens and mining rights pass on to Peter? Even if those mines remained untouched?”

“Yes, they did. Peter inherited them.”

He turned around to face her, and observed, “now, the question is: with Peter dead, who do those liens and mining rights pass to?  And will we ever know whether some of Mansamusa’s gold lies buried in those ancient mines?”

Just then, their radio crackled.  A man’s voice came over the airwaves, “Radio check, over.   All boots on deck; line is secure.  We’ve picked up an increase in traffic.”

The man repeated, “Terminal this is Lightning.  Radio check, over.”

Decades of field work told Miller she was in danger somehow.  When she’d boarded the tender earlier, she’d seen that it really was just Andrew Green in the boat, as he’d promised, so she’d felt relatively relaxed about being out in the middle of the sea, alone with him.  It had now been nearly an hour since they’d motored out of their meeting point, cutting over the water easily.  There were no other boats within eyesight – but the cryptic, military-style radio-check told her they were soon going to be joined by others.  And these reinforcements were Andrew Green’s men, apparently.

They both walked back to the control panel.

As Miller observed him with narrowing eyes, Mr. Green pressed a button on the control panel and asked, “What is your eta to my position, over?”

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
