Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
“You want to “collect” her? What does that mean, exactly?” Miller asked.
He smiled coldly. “You want to know one of my business secrets, Ms. Miller? Pretty simple: I’m not one of those who go around believing knowledge is power. Knowledge isn’t power. That whole line of thinking is bullshit. Information changes so quickly, especially these days. No … it’s not knowledge that’s power. It’s people who are power. I collect people. People who know things. People who own things. And I build power through people.”
“But you seem to dispose of people, too,” Miller pointed out, in just as cold a tone. “That part of the secret?”
“Tsk, tsk, Ms. Miller. What are you worried about? Are you worried about yourself? Killing you was never an option, you know,” he said in a falsely reassuring tone, as he consulted his watch. “If it was, I’d have done something about that a while back, when your former boss, that Philby character, grassed you up to me.”
“No … just as with Bette, potentially, I collected you. I told my people to leave you alone, and keep you alive. For a purpose. I didn’t quite know, yet, back then, but I realized that purpose earlier today, when my men brought you to me. For now, that purpose is to gather what you can about Bette, and report back to me,” Mr. Green said. “So that I can “collect” her, too, later on.”
As they’d talked Miller had been slowly stepping closer to the buttons in the control panel where she’d observed that he’d manipulated the boat’s engines when he’d piloted them to this spot. She estimated that the team that had radioed in was about two-to-three minutes away.
Without warning she jabbed at the buttons that revved the engines up and pushed them to their maximum. The boat shot forward, and the unexpected acceleration threw Mr. Green to the floor. Miller steered the wheel north and west, heading towards the storm, and away from the men speeding towards them. She decided that heading further into the ocean, away from Oahu, would be the safest option right now.
“What are you doing?!” he shouted at her as he scrambled to his feet, lunging towards her.
“What are YOU doing?” she shouted back. She kept him at bay, away from the control panel, with the knife that she’d surreptitiously unzipped from her life jacket earlier, when they’d walked out to the deck. “What is that team that was radioing in coming for?”

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
