    Chapters 1-2

    (Bette) Senator Porter

(Tina) Wow, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that

Bette smiles widely as she climbs into the back of the car.

(Bette) I wasn’t sure I was going to hear from you again

(Tina) I’ve only got a second, I’m between meetings

    (Bette) Sure

(Tina) Sorry I don’t have time to chat so I’ll just get to it. I wanted to ask if you’d have dinner with me

    (Bette) When?

(Tina) Well I could actually do tonight, but I know that’s crazy short notice

    (Bette) Tonight is fine

    (Tina smiles) Great

(Bette) And may I ask if this is a professional or personal request?

    Tina pauses, smiling.

    (Tina) Personal

    Bette smiles broadly.

(Bette) OK then, text me where and when and I’ll be there.

    (Tina) Great, bye Bette.

Later that evening, Bette exits her car, takes a deep breath and walks into the restaurant. She walks in and spots Tina and makes her way over to the table. She kisses her on the cheek and sits down opposite her, looking at her uncertainly. Tina examines her for a moment.

    (Tina) You’re nervous?

    (Bette) Never

Bette takes a gulp of Tina’s wine and Tina laughs, looking at her fondly.

The waiter arrives and they order their meals, and things soon relax as they settle into their usual easy conversation.

(Bette) I read your article on Ford. I couldn’t help but notice my name didn’t appear.

(Tina) Yes, well it didn’t really seem like a fair trade. That would have been political suicide for you.

(Bette) And yet still you gave me the information I asked for.

(Tina) You could have just asked me without a trade, I’d have told you. I think you probably knew I wouldn’t publish your name alongside that.

(Bette frowns) Do you think I was manipulating you?

(Tina smiles) No. Testing me maybe. I guess I passed?

    (Bette) You always pass

Their meals arrive and they chat happily as they eat, relying on their many shared interests and acquaintances. The conversation becomes a little more direct and reflective over their post-dinner wines.

(Bette) Are you seeing anyone at the moment?

    Tina glances at her

(Bette) Friends get to know that
