I Need My Best Friend – Part 4
Tina wondered why she hadn’t heard back from Bette. She dialed her cell and went straight to voice mail again. She hung up and dialed the CAC. ‘James this is Tina. I’ve been trying to get in touch with Bette, do you know where she is?’
‘She’s been in her office since she got in this morning. Lucky for us by the look of things.’
‘Would you put me through?’
James was silent and Tina knew he wasn’t sure what to do.
‘I don’t mean to put you on the spot. Do you think you could slip her a note and tell her I need to speak to her?’
‘Give me a minute. You’ll send help if I don’t come back, right?’
They both laughed. It was only a minute until she heard James say, ‘Here she is.’
‘Tina?’
‘Bette are you all right? I left a message on your cell but you never called me back.’
‘My cell? Hold on I’m sorry I never turned it back on after my session this morning.’
‘All right now I know something is going on. That phone is like an appendage. What happened since last night?’
‘When is the last time you spoke with Foxworthy?’
‘Tuesday, why?’
‘You haven’t talked to him since we were together yesterday?’
‘No. What’s this about?’
‘Do you think I could call you when you get home from your meeting tonight?’
‘Of course, can’t you tell me what’s wrong now?’
‘Nothing is wrong I just need some time to think. I’d like to talk to you about something that came up this morning.’
‘Is that what you were so preoccupied with at The Planet?’
‘Yes, I’m sorry I left so abruptly.’
‘It’s all right. I should be home by ten.’
‘Okay, we’ll talk then.’
They said their goodbyes and as soon as they hung up Bette called Kit. She told Kit all about her day and how she had worked herself into a frenzy over Foxworthy’s comment. She was angry with him and angry with herself for letting her fears take control of her day. She couldn’t believe she had been so consumed with this that an opportunity to spend time with Tina had been missed. Kit just sat and let her talk through what she was feeling. When Bette finally took a breath Kit asked her what she was going to say to Tina. Bette didn’t respond. Kit told her she needed to be honest with Tina about her feelings. Bette was afraid Tina would feel that she was pushing and didn’t want her to back away. Kit told her she didn’t think Tina would pull away if Bette shared her feelings but the same might not be true if she hid them.

Good one! I think it’s a little out of character but then again, who’s not going to be out of character after a big catastrophy in life. It shook Bette enough to change drastically. Good work!
