She looked at her driver. ”Hey, can you go a little faster?”
The driver scoffed. ”I can, but I won’t.”
Bette glanced at the side mirror, then back at the driver. ”Just a little. Please.”
”Are you gonna pay my speeding ticket?!” the driver exploded suddenly.
”Yes, dammit. Now step on it,” Bette answered back.
The cab accelerated progressively. Bette watched as the SUV lagged behind. When she was beginning to calm down, the SUV sped up and fell in behind even tighter.
”What the fuck,” she growled under her breath, anger pricking at her nerves. She turned to her driver again. ”Stop the car now.”
”You must be kidding, lady!” the man almost convulsed with indignation.
”Stop the fucking car!” Bette yelled.
The driver pulled up to the curb and braked sharply. Bette literally flew out of the car and was ready to confront the chaser, but the SUV made a turn at the intersection and disappeared smoothly.
Bette slammed her fist on the cab’s roof hard enough for people around to be bothered by it and turn to stare. Utterly frustrated, the brunette shook her head and plopped back into the passenger seat.
There were only a few customers at the restaurant, so Bette idled her time away. She was glad that Nicole was on vacation currently, because her manager’s loaded stares had began to weigh her down. She couldn’t quite comprehend yet what exactly Nicole wanted from her, and frankly, she was better not knowing.
After her cover was over, Bette decided to head to Tina’s office. It was almost evening anyway, so Bette thought she would pick Tina up from work, they would go to a grocery store and then cook at home together.
As soon as Bette entered the building where Tina’s office was located, she walked up to the information desk and asked the woman behind it for directions. She rode in the elevator up to the sixth floor. Another information desk met her in the hall with a woman behind and Bette supposed it was Tina’s assistant.
”Hello. May I help you?” the woman asked with a polite smile.
”Hello. Tina Kennard’s office that way?” Bette pointed back over her shoulder.
”Um, is she expecting you?”
”I bet she is,” Bette smiled and winked at the woman. She turned on her heels and strolled down the hallway, until she saw an engraved name plate on the door that read, ’Christina Kennard, Production Accountant’.
